🙋 Repurposing a vacant building to make the neighbourhood more liveable for everyone! 🇭🇺 In Budapest, rising rents have made housing unaffordable to many—especially vulnerable social groups. But a local initiative decided to take action. By retrofitting an empty, four-storey building 🏢 on an old industrial site, the project “Cooperative Ownership for Communities” aims to create: 🛏️ A student dormitory 🙎♀️ Social housing for women 🥬 A warehouse for a food co-operative 👟 A gym and an open community space Using circular renovation and 🌱 sustainable materials, this project is creating a mixed-use space that provides women with a safe environment to heal from trauma, offers accommodation for 📚 college students from the countryside, and encourages urban farming. In other words, it not only revitalises an empty space but also builds a vibrant, supportive community around it. “Cooperative Ownership for Communities” was awarded at the latest edition of the 🏆 NEB Prizes, in the strand “Rising Stars” for young talents under 30 years old. 🌿 Transitioning Buildings (and Education) into an Era of Circularity What does it take for 🪵 wood and bio-based materials to play a central role in our construction ecosystem? LIFE Be-WoodEN has a clear mission: to promote the decarbonisation of buildings and improve their 🔄 circularity by addressing cultural, technical, and financial barriers that limit the use of wood in the construction sector. As one of the latest New European Bauhaus projects supported by 🇪🇺 LIFE Programme, LIFE BE-WoodEN aims to train professionals 👷♂️ in the construction sector, overcome local wood supply fragmentation, and embed New European Bauhaus principles at every stage of the construction process. Backed by 🇮🇹 Università degli Studi di Genova, the project is also testing innovative and sustainable building solutions to meet the needs of elderly and socially vulnerable groups, 🏠 helping to provide affordable and high-quality housing. 🌿 Beautifying EU Neighbourhoods Through Nature-Based Solutions The LIFE SeedNEB project (July 2024–June 2028) aims to combine nature-based solutions with the New European Bauhaus to transform three selected neighbourhoods. Specifically, the project will focus on: 🇪🇸 The Enrique Tierno Galván Cultural Centre in Lorquí, Spain 🇮🇹 The Leonardo Sinisgalli School in Potenza, Italy 🇭🇺 A residential block of 40 homes in Dunaújváros, Hungary Co-funded by 🇪🇺 LIFE Programme and led by Lorquí City Council, LIFE SeedNEB will promote biodiversity, revitalise the built environment, and enhance the well-being of local communities. 🐝 These nature-based solutions are expected to reduce air, water, and noise pollution, protect against floods and heatwaves, and strengthen the connection between people and nature. To reach the project's goals, each municipality will establish a 📚 NEB Citizen School, a NEB Ambassador, and a Biodiversity Office. 🙅♀️ No Demolition Needed: Salvaging Materials to Reinvent Spaces The Lycée Michel Lucius in 🇱🇺 Luxembourg set out with an ambitious vision: to transform a 30-year-old wooden classroom into a modern library, deconstruct a 1970s wing while salvaging as many materials as possible, and redevelop the courtyard to meet student needs. For years, the school had lacked a central communal space—a missing “heart” due to the absence of an urban master plan for the campus. 👷♀️ Architects took this opportunity to go above and beyond, ensuring that no building materials went to waste. Take the school’s new pergola, for instance. Crafted from reclaimed steel beams from the old library and topped with ☀️ light solar sails, it quickly became a popular gathering spot for students during the summer months. This is just one example of circularity leading the way, offering students a richer learning and living experience.
