On September 30th in the UK, a Mercedes EQA caught fire while charging. The video showed the explosion happened just 31 seconds after the initial visible off-gas. This quick escalation teaches us important safety lessons for Energy Storage Systems (ESS) and batteries. Batteries are part of our daily lives. While such events are unlikely, they have a potential significant impact. NFPA 855 & 1 teaches us what we can do to mitigate those fire hazards: “precluding thermal runaway” How? By detecting anomalies in the Stage 1 abuse phase. Monitoring this phase helps to catch issues before they lead to a potential thermal runaway. That is what we focus on with Prevent-iON.
