Photocopies of two petitions from free black men in Charleston and Columbia (S.C.). A petition dated January 10, 1861, is addressed to the mayor of Columbia, J.H. Boatwright, and is signed by twenty-three men of mixed race in that city including James Bampfield, offering their services in the defense of South Carolina to the governor (Francis W. Pickens). The second petition is addressed to the South Carolina governor by "Free men of the City of Charleston" who offer to "assist in preparing the State for a defence, against any action which may be taken against her.".
