During the late nineteenth century, various photographers created the bulk of the photographs contained in this collection, which primarily feature citizens of Johnstown, Pennsylvania. Photographers also created studio portraits in Allegheny, Apollo, Blairsville, Braddock, and Indiana, Pennsylvania. In addition, the collection consists of five portraits created in Illinois, Iowa, Maryland, Nebraska, and Ohio. While at least one of the portraits features a Bassett family member, most of the photos feature unrelated people

The collection contains interviews conducted in 1979 and 1980 for the George Meany Center for Labor Studies Oral History Project. The oral history projects main focus is on the AFL and CIO merger. Not all of the transcripts reproduced for this collection include the complete interview, but only select pages in which the interviewees mention or discuss the garment industry, the ILGWU and its members or officers, and particularly David Dubinsky.
