Scientists say artificial intelligence (AI) has crossed a critical "red line" and has replicated itself. In a new study, researchers from China showed that two popular large language models (LLMs) could clone themselves. "Successful self-replication under no human assistance is the essential step for AI to outsmart [humans], and is an early signal for rogue AIs," the researchers wrote in the study, published Dec. 9, 2024 to the preprint database arXiv. https://lnkd.in/deCmBW7e

Global investment firm Goldman Sachs is ready to start replacing its employees with AI. The company announced that it's rolled out a "GS AI assistant" to around 10,000 employees as part of its longer-term effort to introduce AI-powered "employees," as CNBC reports. https://lnkd.in/eW_Fiemz

The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) has been stepping up its efforts in the world of AI — including an eyebrow-raising use of chatbot tech. As the New York Times reports, the CIA has been quietly developing a platform that lets analysts "talk" to foreign leaders, in a bid to predict how they might react in certain situations. https://lnkd.in/eBHzzcfp

The Arctic has warmed nearly four times faster than the global average since 1979. Svalbard, an archipelago near the northeast coast of Greenland, is at the frontline of this climate change, warming up to seven times faster than the rest of the world. To better understand glaciers in Svalbard and beyond, we used an AI model to analyse millions of satellite images from Svalbard over the past four decades. Our research is now published in Nature Communications, and shows these glaciers are shrinking faster than ever, in line with global warming. https://lnkd.in/g22iMHgv

Scientists have just resurrected "ELIZA," the world's first chatbot, from long-lost computer code — and it still works extremely well. Using dusty printouts from MIT archives, these "software archaeologists" discovered defunct code that had been lost for 60 years and brought it back to life. https://lnkd.in/gygtqQZA

The rise of large language models (LLMs) has brought remarkable breakthroughs in natural language processing (NLP). Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), a popular framework that enriches LLMs with external knowledge, has been pivotal in building domain-specific applications. However, RAG struggles with key limitations, especially in professional domains that demand logic, precision, and coherent reasoning. https://lnkd.in/evVYxHNB

A two-hour conversation with an artificial intelligence (AI) model is all it takes to make an accurate replica of someone's personality, researchers have discovered. In a new study published Nov. 15 to the preprint database arXiv, researchers from Google and Stanford University created "simulation agents" — essentially, AI replicas — of 1,052 individuals based on two-hour interviews with each participant. These interviews were used to train a generative AI model designed to mimic human behavior. https://lnkd.in/gnQaQKVc

Artificial intelligence (AI) comes in many forms, from pattern recognition systems to generative AI. However, there's another type of AI that can respond almost instantly to real-word data: embodied AI. But what exactly is this technology, and how does it work? Embodied AI typically combines sensors with machine learning to respond to real-world data. Examples include autonomous drones, self-driving cars and factory automation. Robotic vacuum cleaners and lawn mowers use a simplified form of embodied AI. https://lnkd.in/g5cr2tDf
What is embodied AI?
