Greece became the first EU country to introduce a six-day working week. It is important to note that this policy does not apply universally to all occupations. The new regulation, which came into force on 1 July 2024, mainly affects certain sectors and types of businesses. Here are the main professions and industries affected: 1. Public sector employees 2. Public service employees 3. Employees of banks 4. Employees of the private sector in certain industries. The provision applies in particular to: - enterprises which operate continuously or with a 24-hour working time five or six days a week - Industrial and manufacturing enterprises - Undertakings providing round-the-clock services It is extremely important to understand that this change is not mandatory for all businesses or employees. Rather, it is designed to address specific challenges in certain industries, especially those that struggle with scheduling rotating shifts and finding specialized staff. Some sectors are specifically excluded from this new arrangement: - The travel industry - The food industry The Greek government introduced this policy to address shift scheduling issues, increase productivity and tackle the problem of undeclared and unregulated work. Employers must declare their intention to use the sixth working day in the PS ERGANI II system, and employees working during the sixth day will receive additional remuneration. https://lnkd.in/dC6bPNGF
