Survey Says: Podcast Advertising Continues to Grow

It’s that time again, as Magellan AI has released its Q2 report on podcast advertising. The data, as those in the podcast industry would expect, point to sustained growth, with spending continuing to climb as more brands dip their proverbial toes into the water. This exemplifies the opportunity brands in various industries have in front of them, and this is a great time to take advantage of that opportunity to advertise on Podbean podcasts.

Overall, podcast ad spending in Q2 increased by 22% year-over-year. This surge underscores the growing confidence brands have in the podcast medium as mentioned in this Podbean article. In addition, a notable 1,516 brands advertised on podcasts for the first time this quarter, marking a nearly 2% rise from Q1. These newcomers spent an average of $21,000, favoring mid-roll placements, which remain the most popular ad spot. The average ad length was 54 seconds, reflecting the trend toward concise yet impactful messaging.

In terms of industries, Gaming has emerged as a major driver of this growth, with ad spending more than tripling quarter-over-quarter—a staggering 3.6x increase. Brands like Monopoly Go, Senua’s Saga, and New York Times Games were at the forefront, demonstrating the sector’s vibrant presence in podcast advertising. Overall, Q2 spending surpassed Q1 by 7% and exceeded Q2 of the previous year by 22%.

Industries that saw the most significant budget increases include Gaming (+256% from Q1 to Q2), Jewelry (+94%), and Eyewear (+74%). The top advertising sectors remained Business Software & Services, Financial Services, Hobbies/Lifestyle, and Food.

What about the top podcast advertisers? Seven out of the top ten advertisers in Q2 were also leading spenders in Q1, highlighting consistency among established brands. However, Mint Mobile made a notable entry into the top ranks, joining regulars like BetterHelp, Amazon, Shopify, Progressive, and SimpliSafe.

Sports continued to be the most popular genre for new brands, with one in five including sports podcasts in their media plans. Following closely were News and Comedy, attracting brands eager to reach diverse audiences. Brands to watch for increased spending include Raising Cane’s, Hershey’s, HP, Volkswagen, Jersey Mike’s, and Circa Sports. These companies are expected to bolster their podcast presence in the coming months, based on what the data is saying.

That’s a lot of information to process, but, in short, as podcasting continues to evolve, investing in this medium presents a powerful way to engage listeners and grow your brand. For those interested in leveraging this trend, exploring podcast advertising can be crucial for expanding your reach and connecting with target audiences.
