Going beyond 'build back better' to 'build better before.' We've been collaborating with Cambridge Centre for Risk Studies for over a decade but in recent years the area of focus has been on disaster recovery and disaster resilience. The themes combine reformative disaster recovery "Build Back Better", with loss avoidance and climate adaptation "Build Better Before", which align with our ethos. Jonathan Gale, Chief Underwriting Officer, AXA XL Re, discusses what reinsurers can do today to lessen the impact of a changing climate now and for tomorrow, in the wake of Hurricane Milton and the 2024 Hurricane Season. Today, The Government of The Bahamas, in partnership with the Inter-American Development Bank, The Nature Conservancy’s Nature Bonds Program, Builders Vision, AXA XL and Standard Chartered, announced The Bahamas Debt Conversion Project for Marine Conservation. Expected to unlock USD 124 million for conservation funding over 15 years, the project will provide funding and technical support for initiatives supporting conservation and effective management of The Bahamas’ vast ocean. This will help protect extensive coral reefs, seagrass meadows and mangrove forests—all of which provide critical habitats for diverse species, protect coasts from storms, provide food for communities and sustain local livelihoods, especially in fisheries and tourism.
