🌎 Latin America - A leading hub for CDR in the Global South 🌿 Home to 13 CDR companies and global partners and 10+ projects across 7 countries, the region is already a huge hub for durable CDR, with biochar being the most predominant method by sales. Let us take a look at some of the key players in the landscape: 🇧🇴 The world’s largest supplier of biochar carbon removal credits, Exomad Green continues to scale new heights, having sold over 355,000 tonnes of CDR. Recent highlights include selling 36,000 credits to NextGen CDR and plans to double its removal capacity, targeting 800,000 tonnes by 2027. 🚀 Recently Terradot, a company scaling enhanced weathering in Brazil, announced its official launch and sold 290,000 tonnes of CDR to Google and Frontier. The deal with Google (for 200,000 tonnes) is the largest enhanced weathering deal to date. 🇧🇷 French biochar producer NetZero, has 2 plants in Brazil with a combined capacity to remove 12,500 tonnes of CO2 a year. Brazil-based InPlanet, has been one of the leading enhanced weathering suppliers in the region, which recently sold 1,950 tonnes of CDR to AXA Switzerland and plans to remove 1 million tonnes of CO2 by 2026. 💨 There is also a strong potential for DAC, as German manufacturer DACMA GmbH recently commenced operations in its first DAC plant in Brazil in partnership with Repsol after a successful pilot phase, which is also the largest in South America while there are other companies such as CarbonAir Energy, Ecolair and Porsche AG with projects and operations in the region. 📣 Brazil is set to host COP30 in 2025 in Belem and the CDR community is already working towards organizing a dedicated CDR pavilion to bring discussions on carbon removal at the heart of the conference. They are also on the lookout for someone to lead the effort in running the CDR pavilion.
