His expertise spans firm dynamics, technology adoption, entrepreneurship, international trade, and impact evaluation. Marcio holds a PhD in international economics from the Graduate Institute in Geneva. His research is widely published, and his extensive experience in economics spans government, academia, the private sector, and international organizations. Q: Why are you so passionate about economics❔ ➡️ Growing up in a very modest neighborhood in Brazil during a high inflation period, I witnessed firsthand how economic decisions influence lives, shape inequality, and affect opportunities. This inspired my passion for studying economics and leveraging its tools to drive impactful and equitable solutions. Q: Why does it matter❔ ➡️ Economics knowledge can provide a framework for tackling key development outcomes, including productivity, poverty, inequality, and climate change challenges. At the World Bank Group, economic insights are essential for designing and improving operations that create lasting development impact. Q: What do you wish more people knew about the economics of private sector development❔ ➡️Creating better jobs for more people requires the development of more competitive and capable firms. Understanding the technological sophistication of firms and addressing the main barriers entrepreneurs face to creating more impactful businesses in developing countries will enable us to be more effective in improving people’s lives. 🔗 Read more about his journey ➡️ http://wrld.bg/O5C250Umv0x #IFCEconomics

👉 What are private sector solutions in forced displacement contexts? At the heart of the IFC UNHCR Joint Initiative is a bold belief: the private sector holds the power to transform lives, foster resilience, and unlock opportunities for forcibly displaced populations and the communities that host them. But this isn’t just about finding solutions—it’s about redefining what’s possible. It’s about showing that businesses can be a force for good in the world’s most challenging contexts while unlocking new opportunities for growth and innovation. This partnership proves that empowering forcibly displaced persons (FDPs) isn’t just the right thing to do—it’s also a smart business strategy. Together, we’re demonstrating that inclusion and opportunity can drive sustainable growth, resilience, and impact. By harnessing the private sector's expertise, resources, and commitment, we aim to create opportunities that empower displaced individuals and their hosts, rebuild communities, and strengthen economies. 🎥 Watch the video to discover how inclusive partnerships are reshaping the future. 💡 Now we want to hear from you—what does private sector engagement in FDP contexts mean to you? How do you see businesses shaping solutions and seizing opportunities? Share your thoughts below.

IFC’s new inclusive hiring initiative in #Brazil and #Colombia recruits highly qualified graduate students who are Afro-descendants—people whose ancestors were formerly enslaved throughout Latin America. Even though one out of every four Latin Americans is of African descent, Afro-descendants’ career opportunities are extremely limited. This recruiting effort aims to equalize access to jobs by proactively reaching out to the Afro-descendant community through partnerships with local nonprofits. IFC has attracted young economists like Mayra Duarte and Arthur Ferreira, who are now contributing to IFC’s work in Brazil’s underserved communities. For them and other participants, working at IFC represents “a real chance for change,” according to Bruno Gomes, cofounder of the Network of Black Economists of Brazil (REPP - Rede de Economistas Pretas e Pretos), IFC’s partner in Brazil. Inclusive hiring demonstrates that the private sector “can deliver solutions that are culturally relevant and impactful,” says Giuliana Brayan, from Manos Visibles, IFC’s Colombian partner. “Racial diversity is not only a moral imperative, but a strategic advantage.” We couldn’t have said it any better. Our inclusive hiring initiative transforms workplaces to more closely reflect the communities they serve—ultimately strengthening our offerings to clients. 📢 Learn how IFC is building a more inclusive future: http://wrld.bg/SlAL50UntnV #DiversityInLeadership #EquityAndInclusion #SustainableGrowth
