New DNV research has outlined the extent of cybersecurity risks to shipping with recommendations about how to best manage these in an increasingly connected maritime industry. The Maritime Cyber Priority 2024/2025 report highlights how the average shipping company suffers a cyber attack every five days, leading to between 65 and 80 breaches per year. The statistics have been highlighted in this TradeWinds article which looks at how “spray and pay” attacks are being deployed by criminals casting their net wide to make money. And with at least 42,000 ships now connected to satellite services, the “air gap” that once protected vessels has now closed.
