“Philanthropy must step into its full potential—not just as a funder, but as a connector, systems thinker, and advocate for a just and inclusive climate future. We cannot accept our weak multilateral systems as the best we have. Instead, we must invest in transforming ourselves, and these systems into mechanisms that redress historical inequity and work for those most impacted by the #ClimateCrisis”. The outcomes of #COP29 left much to be desired, but #philanthropy has a unique role to play. Erika Miller from WINGS shares three reflections on how philanthropy can step into its full potential to drive justice-led #ClimateAction. "The challenges we face are complex, so we must work together—and work differently," emphasised Sameera Mehra, WINGS Director of Collective Intelligence and Advocacy, while presenting the recommendations by the C20 working group on Philanthropy for Sustainable Development (WG9) at the #C20Summit. Philanthropy offers unique strengths: resources, expertise, risk-taking, and networks. With over $70 billion in cross-border giving, philanthropy is uniquely positioned to drive innovation, invest in research, and convene key players to address global issues. WINGS, GIFE and International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) co-chaired a working group of over 400 organisations to develop recommendations for the #G20, calling for inclusive partnership with philanthropy to build trust, unlock catalytic capital, and reform multilateral systems. The G20 and philanthropy can scale successful solutions and ensure accessible resources to ensure this. There is also a need for a reformed, inclusive financial architecture and an international tax system, as this is crucial to advancing sustainable development. “India’s robust presence as a scaling lab for critical solutions to the world’s most complex issues is a harbinger for a future where the Majority World is empowered to solve for itself”. India’s #philanthropy landscape is shifting toward localised giving, driven by rising inequality and stagnant global funding. Ami Misra and Prachi Pal from Dasra highlight the growing role of family philanthropy, collaborative platforms, and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) laws in positioning India as a model for global solutions.
