To celebrate Bradford 2025 UK City of Culture, Bradford District Museums and Galleries and 125 young people from the district were offered the opportunity to create a new exhibition with artworks from the Government Art Collection.
Curators at Bradford District Museums and Galleries asked their counterparts at the Government Art Collection to suggest a selection of art they thought young people in Bradford district would be intrigued by and enjoy engaging with.
After considering a longlist with a group of young people, we selected a shortlist of 22 works of art on the theme of identity. Apart from two which are historical, they also offer the viewpoint of a British artist working in the UK now. Over a six-month period, we had conversations and workshops exploring the artworks with over 125 young people up to the age of 21.
The exhibition in this gallery showcases the Government Art Collection artworks alongside the responses of the young people and shares some of their personal reflections about their own identity.
