At #COP29 The GCCA – Global Cement and Concrete Association launched international definitions for low-carbon cement and concrete. While launching the new definition, their CEO stated "We now call on policymakers, governments and the private sector to procure green cement and concrete and provide the key signals to our sector to accelerate decarbonization. “ The definitions are expected to help drive demand for low-carbon materials and accelerate the transition to a more sustainable built environment. We welcome any moves to procuring more sustainable cement, TOPWERK GROUP endorsed Partanna's carbon negative cement as the number one green alternative to Portland cement, so we stand ready to work with the industry. The definitions and new policies emphasize how CCUS has a key role to play in decarbonizing the industry, but it is important to note McKinsey's caution for CCUS: “Many clinker producers are already focused on implementing CCUS, but these technologies often come with a high price tag and remain unproven at scale in the industry.” #cement #sustainability Read more about the new definitions here: https://lnkd.in/eCWgdww3

In the second week of COP29 Azerbaijan, we’re shining a spotlight on a high-priority topic that is particularly top of mind for small island nations, like The Bahamas, who are on the frontlines of climate change– Adaptation Finance. According to the United Nations Foundation, nearly 1.2 billion people around the world are at elevated risks of becoming climate refugees due to the devastating impacts of climate change. Each year we fall short of an estimated $366 billion in adaptation financing, a staggering shortfall in investment required for countries to adjust to the effects of intensified climate change. Adaptation Finance helps better prepare at-risk communities, minimize economic impacts, and develop plans for future action including deploying climate solutions like coastal breakwaters and seawalls. Yet, despite this growing need, finance goals are falling behind. The Government of The Bahamas has been vocal about how adaptation finance has been long-neglected. Since 2019, the nation has undergone an economic recovery effort in the wake of over $3 Billion in damages caused by Hurricane Dorian, nearly a quarter of the country's GDP. According to Bloomberg, The Bahamas has received nearly $155 million in climate finance, yet only $10 million is targeted towards adaptation. So how can at-risk countries like The Bahamas get back on track with adaptation finance needs? In his opening remarks of COP29, the Prime Minister of The Bahamas, Hon. Philip Davis, called for coordinated climate finance commitments to meet established climate goals for 2030. He stated “Each climate disaster leaves us with even less…the numbers paint a clear picture. Small island states have spent more than 18x more in debt repayments than they have received in climate finance.” His closing message urged nations to find the ability to finance climate adaptation before it is too late, stating “The world has found the ability to finance wars, the ability to mobilize against pandemics, yet when it comes to addressing the most profound crisis of our time, the very survival of nations–where is that same ability?” We stand with the Prime Minister of The Bahamas and our 100% carbon negative cement is the perfect solution for climate adaptation, resilience, and prevention. Because of the materials we utilize – brine and upcycled industry waste – we’ve pioneered a product that enables the built environment to adapt to climate events while tackling the root cause of climate change. From residential solutions to coastal infrastructure, investment into climate solutions like Partanna can be the adaptation solution that small island nations need to safeguard themselves against future climate disasters. It's an exciting milestone day for us and the world of carbon markets! Our carbon removal project in The Bahamas has been validated by the World's Largest Voluntary Carbon Registry, Verra. Our CEO Rick Fox responded to the announcement: “As one of only two companies in the world to have secured Verra project validation and registration approval for Direct Air Capture and carbon removal in cement, this milestone is a major accomplishment for Partanna. "This is a clear demonstration that carbon credits in construction can be rock-solid. With our technology, we’re creating credits that are not only measurable and verifiable, but permanent. Our sustainable cement binder doesn’t just avoid emissions; it actively removes CO₂ from the atmosphere. Verra’s validation means companies and developers can trust our credits to make a real impact, and that’s exactly what the planet needs right now.” Read more here: https://lnkd.in/ettBkrZg #sustainability #carbonmarkets #carboncredits

As we reach the close of the first week of COP29 Azerbaijan, we turned to our CEO and co-founder Rick Fox to share a few thoughts on what topics should be prioritized this session, predictions and trends for 2025, and hopes around current climate action: 💡 Priorities for COP29: Global Carbon Price Floor "The climate crisis doesn’t care about national borders, so why should carbon pricing? It’s time to set a global carbon price floor, a universal minimum cost for carbon emissions that applies to every nation. COP29 should push for an internationally coordinated carbon pricing mechanism that gives every country, from the biggest emitters to the smallest island nations, an equitable baseline. This would incentivize innovation and penalize pollution in a way that finally levels the playing field." 💡Predictions for 2025: Decarbonizing by Design: Carbon-Negative Architecture "Sustainability is no longer about being “net-zero”— it’s about going carbon negative. Look out for buildings made with materials that actively pull carbon out of the atmosphere. Innovations in concrete and CO₂-storing wood composites mean skyscrapers will function more like urban forests. Carbon-negative architecture will become a statement of cutting-edge prestige, redefining what luxury means in urban design." 💡Climate Action Optimism: The Rise of “Climate-First” Mayors and Local Leaders "As national governments dither, cities are stepping up in a big way. From Amsterdam to Bogotá to Los Angeles, mayors are pushing ambitious policies on green infrastructure, bike lanes, urban rewinding, and zero-emission public transport. Local leaders are picking up the slack, showing that real change often happens at street level. It’s the gritty, no-nonsense approach that the climate fight needs." Over the next 2-weeks, Baku, Azerbaijan will host COP29 Azerbaijan, the United Nations Climate Change Conference that brings together UNFCCC member nations around the world to make multilateral decisions addressing climate change. Last COP28, participating nations reached an agreement that laid the groundwork for an equitable and swift transition away from fossil fuel reliance. This year, governments must establish new climate finance goals, ensuring that every nation is enabled to take significant climate actions towards lowering GHG emissions. According to UN Climate Change, global greenhouse gas emissions must be cut 43% by 2030 to reach the 2016 Paris Agreement. However, participating nations are falling short of this promise. Despite negotiations from UNFCCC nations pledging to reduce fossil fuel reliance, global electricity demand throughout 2024 has skyrocketed faster than the rate of adoption for renewables, with the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) highlighting new oil and gas permits with a total potential to emit over 2 Billion tons of carbon dioxide. When we look at the cement industry, which is responsible for nearly 9% of global annual emissions, credit must be given as significant progress has been made via innovations in lowered-carbon cements and improvements in energy efficiency. However, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA) the global cement sector still needs to decarbonize at a much faster pace than it currently is, unable to make the 4% annual emissions cuts needed through 2030. So what is the answer for nations to eliminate cement-related emissions? UNFCCC nations have the opportunity in front of them to adopt a 100% carbon-negative cement with no compromise to development and infrastructure demands–Partanna Cement. Partanna Cement is a Magnesium Oxide (MgO)-based cement that is a 1:1 replacement for Portland Cement, upcycling industry byproducts and desalination brine to create a proprietary binder that avoids all emissions from the clinker-process and removes net carbon dioxide directly from the atmosphere. From small-island nations in the Caribbean to rapidly developing countries in the MENA region, Partanna Cement is the solution to immediate, tangible lowered emissions across the cement and concrete industries. The adoption of Partanna Cement can not only meet global demand and infrastructural needs, but it is a cost-effective and stronger alternative to Portland Cement that can help UNFCCC nations reach their NDC pledges. Much has been made of challenges unlocking climate finance to help developing nations adapt and tackle climate change, and we are the answer to decarbonizing the built environment. Our CEO, Rick Fox spoke to edie about our revolutionary carbon negative cement: “The cement industry, perhaps because it’s not seen as ‘sexy’, doesn’t make the headlines that electric vehicles, nuclear or solar energy make, but there does need to be a real focus on this." “I would encourage all levels of government around the world to look closely at quickly bringing in tax relief schemes for companies that produce or procure sustainable cement, create fast tracked planning permissions for new factories to manufacture green concrete, and to expedite new binders into the building codes.” Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/g3TvxjvN #sustainability #innovation
