📣 Press Release! 📣 Read more about the Oceans North event held as part of the GLOBE Series conference in Toronto 🇨🇦 Thank you to Amy Nugent & your team for empowering Veer.Voyage and Zero Emissions Ship Technology Association (ZESTAs) on stage! As a representative of both organisations, Danielle Southcott stated “The workshop was a great opportunity to both look at the global context of the energy transition through a shipping lens, and to consider how Canada and Canadians could truly reach zero emissions.” 🌬️ 🔋 📣 One major takeaway 📣 Clean*, ocean-going, container-shipping is available to order now: a clean container ship will be in service 30 months after contract signing. https://veer.voyage/move Madadh MacLaine #greenhydrogen #wind #cleanenergy #cleanshipping *For Veer and for ZESTAs, "clean" means absolute-zero-emission as per International Maritime Organization definition. https://lnkd.in/gJhzkt8i

Let's go to Toronto! Danielle Southcott will be speaking alongside industry experts next week at the #GlobeXChange event x Oceans North 🌊 As always, open and direct discussion on future fuels, clean energy, and how absolute-zero-emission can be scaled up today. See you there! . . . Madadh MacLaine Zero Emissions Ship Technology Association (ZESTAs)
Join Oceans North for a collaborative workshop to explore the financing, technology, fuel, and policy solutions needed to decarbonize shipping. Together, we will dive into practical tools for understanding, measuring, and reducing shipping emissions to make good on your net-zero supply chain commitments. This session is presented by Oceans North. Featuring: · Charles Haines, Executive Director of Decarbonization of Air, Rail and Marine, Transport Canada - Transports Canada · Amy Nugent, Associate Director of Marine Climate Action, Oceans North · Danielle Southcott, Founder & CEO, Veer.Voyage · Andrew Waddell, Manager, Shipping Decarbonization, RMI Only one week until North America’s sustainability community gathers at #GLOBExCHANGE 2025 in #Toronto! Thank you Michael Barnard for your Forbes article titled ''Ammonia Is A Great Fertilizer But Would Be A Terrible Shipping Fuel''. Here are the major takeaways: ''The ammonia industry is pushing its product hard... there are a couple of things that they say which are accurate... it burns more cleanly than diesel, and that’s mostly true.'' ''What is ammonia? It’s one nitrogen atom and three hydrogen atoms. The hydrogen is what burns and provides the energy. The nitrogen doesn’t burn... nitrogen likes to bond with oxygen in nitrous oxides...nitrous oxides aren’t benign at all. When two nitrogen atoms combine with one oxygen atom we get what we commonly call laughing gas. The problem with that is that it’s 273 times more potent than carbon dioxide as a greenhouse gas and it lasts a long time in the atmosphere. A little does a lot of harm.'' ''It’s all made from fossil fuels right now. Hydrogen is stripped off of coal, oil or gas using steam reformation processes that emit a lot of CO2, then combined with air... in pressure vessels with heat.'' ''But stripping hydrogen off of geologically stored hydrocarbons combines all the carbon in the material with oxygen from the air to create carbon dioxide, which never gets captured. And both coal and gas extraction come with a heavy helping of leaking methane gas, which is 29 times more potent than carbon dioxide as a greenhouse gas. Current ammonia is black or gray ammonia. Every ton of ammonia today has about 0.18 tons of hydrogen, and that represents a carbon debt of two to six tons of carbon dioxide.'' ''Ammonia only has 42% as much energy in it as marine diesel...To get the same forward motion for the boat, we need to burn two and half times as much of it, so that two tons of carbon debt turns into 4.7 tons of carbon debt. That’s a lot worse than burning diesel directly in a ship’s engines.'' ''The best possible price for bunkered green ammonia is around US$1900 for the same energy as $500 per ton VLSFO (the ten year global average per Ship & Bunker), almost four times as much.'' ''But it’s the safety aspect that really ties the anchor chain around the idea of ammonia as a shipping fuel. As a gas, ammonia in concentrations as low as 300 parts per million — that’s three-quarters of the concentration of carbon dioxide — can seriously damage human lungs, skin and eyes, and can cause death. When ammonia mixes with water, it creates a caustic base that’s harmful to humans and toxic to aquatic life.'' ''A Netherlands health and safety official... [said] that any major spill could kill 80,000 people. Right now the relatively small volumes of ammonia shipped through ports are in special hazardous chemicals zones and are treated with very high standards and care to avoid spillage.'' ''At almost four times the cost, with high nitrous oxide emissions and very high safety concerns, the ammonia industry’s dreams of multiplying their market are just that, dreams. It would be a nightmare for everyone else.''

''Imagine a world where the oceans are plied by vast, gleaming ships that leave no trace of pollution in their wake. No black plumes of smoke mar the skies, and no roaring diesel engines shatter the serenity of coastal communities. Instead, these vessels run silently and cleanly, fuelled by the limitless potential of #nuclear #energy.'' These recent words of The Maritime Executive could just have easily been written about #renewable energy, including #greenhydrogen, #wind, and #solar. Indeed, the above sentence would be more accurately written about renewables than nuclear waste/energy, as it disregards multi-generational, toxic, nuclear waste when writing ''gleaming ships that leave no trace of pollution in their wake*.'' If you're unsure about the externalities of nuclear waste/energy, I encourage you to read Dr. Kate Brown's book #Plutopia - or at least watch this interview: https://lnkd.in/gFr4HdsT Or, better yet, ask someone from the Marshall Islands how they feel about stored nuclear waste/energy (or watch this video: https://lnkd.in/g-ebWBH3) *All energy generation or propulsion systems have infrastructure as a form of waste (ex. hydrogen fuel cells have an end of life, just as any physical reactor would. The difference being addressed is the waste associated with the consumed fuel / energy. We won't tag anyone in case they are not in a position where they can publicly share opinions on nuclear waste/energy - it's a topic inextricably linked to weapons proliferation, so we understand that many people don't feel safe to pose public opposition to nuclear waste/energy. https://lnkd.in/gfVXWmhR

Veer’s ships are ‘‘absolute-zero-emission’’ as per International Maritime Organization definition*. No offsetting, no insetting, no math. Just 100% clean energy. Learn more at https://veer.voyage/ . . . *IMO Definition: ''Absolute zero 7 The term ‘absolute zero’ is used to describe an energy source that produces no direct or indirect GHG emissions across the full Well-to-Wake lifecycle. To be more specific, ‘absolute zero’ describes where there are no emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) or other greenhouse gases (GHG) across all scopes, i.e., where there are no direct emissions from fuel consumption or indirect emissions from energy purchased or any GHG emissions from production to end use.''
