A huge thank you to SADC Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (SACREEE) for an exceptionally well-organized week filled with insightful presentations and valuable networking opportunities. These snapshots were captured on Day 4, where I had the privilege of contributing to the session on Energy Efficiency (Lighting, Cooling, Buildings): Optimizing Energy Efficiency in Buildings through Innovations in Lighting and Cooling Systems. I am grateful to have shared this platform with incredible professionals including Angellah Wekongo at CLASP, Pascal Damian at Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH Malawi, Ishmael Motlhale at Debswana Diamond Company, Valeria Arroyave Cardozo at UNIDO, Austria, Readlay Makaliki at SADC Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (SACREEE), Keolebogile Segomelo at Botswana Bureau Of Standards and Simasiku Mukwaso at Ministry of Minerals and Energy (Department of Energy). Let us keep the conversation going and continue raising awareness among professionals and the wider community. As I always say, Africans have always embraced sustainability through traditional practices. We are not advocating a return to the past but rather recognizing the wisdom in our indigenous knowledge and using it as a foundation for innovation. • What are NDCs? Nationally Determined Contributions, or NDCs, are national climate action plans by each country under the Paris Agreement. A country’s NDC outlines their strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to enable the collective global goal of limiting temperature rise to 1.5ºC and adapt to the impacts of climate change.   The Paris Agreement requires that NDCs are updated with increasingly higher ambition, taking into consideration each country’s capacity. The next round of updated NDCs were due in February 2025. It is absolutely critical that the NDCs accelerates the transition and closes the gap to 1.5ºC. This can be achieved by not overlooking the role of buildings. #GreenBuilding #SustainableArchitecture #NetZero #ClimateResilientDesign #UrbanHeatIsland #BuildingLife #WGBW2024 #BuildingResilience #BuildingForEveryone #BuildingTheTransition #BeBoldOnBuildings World Green Building Council UN Climate Change UN Environment Programme

With growing global demand for ethical and environmentally sourced diamonds, the mining giant is accelerating its transition to a low-carbon future through operational efficiencies, renewable energy adoption, and regulatory collaboration. This was shared by Debswana Executive Head of Safety and Sustainability, Mpho Mosate. She further went on that as a-high production entity, Debswana recognizes its responsibility to reduce emissions. “Our ‘Building Forever’ strategy is a commitment to sustainability, focusing on decarbonisation, operational efficiency, and renewable energy adoption,” she explained. Debswana key initiatives include improving mining equipment efficiency, reducing idle time in operations, and integrating alternative fuels. Mosate highlighted that the industry is also pushing for clear regulatory frameworks to facilitate private-sector access to renewable energy and carbon offset mechanisms. “We need auditable instruments like renewable energy certificates to prove that our power comes from sustainable sources,” the executive head added. “Consumers and regulators in markets like China, Europe, and the U.S. demand greater transparency,” she emphasised. With international pressure mounting and only five years left to meet its carbon-neutral goal, Debswana is calling for swift action. “The time for debate is over we need execution, regulatory support, and investment to secure a sustainable future,” Mosate concluded.

According to BIUST Vice Chancellor Professor Otlogetwe Totolo, “The satellite is already sitting on the rocket, ready for launch in early March.” BOTSAT-1 will be launched aboard a SpaceX mission from the Space Force Launch Pad in California, USA. Developed as part of the country’s broader efforts to leverage space science for national development, the satellite is expected to play a crucial role in providing critical data for various sectors. These include agriculture, urban planning, and disaster management. Equipped with an onboard hyperspectral camera, BOTSAT-1 will provide critical intelligence on soil and ground composition, benefiting Botswana’s agriculture and mining industries. By leveraging this space-derived data, BIUST aims to empower decision-makers with valuable insights for long-term planning and investment. The project is led by Dr. Dimane Mpoeleng and a dedicated team of about 40 volunteers at BIUST. They have successfully constructed the Ground Station, which will serve as the central hub for communicating with the satellite once it is in orbit. Botswana Flooding and Climate Change. The devastating floods we are experiencing in Gaborone, Botswana, are a direct consequence of climate change. It brings me no joy to say this, but the reality is undeniable. The very apparent effects of climate change, which we’ve long feared, have finally arrived at our doorstep here in Gaborone and they’ve arrived in the most devastating way. These floods have so far claimed 7 lives , destroyed property in homes, and left over 1000 families evacuated. The losses if life related to this flood are now up to 7 , including 3 children and a teenager. For a country like Botswana, where heatwaves and droughts have been the most visible impacts of climate change, this is a rude awakening. It’s a painful reminder that climate change is not a distant threat—it’s here, and it’s reshaping lives in ways we never imagined. This is a call to action. We must confront this crisis head-on, not just as a nation but as a global community. The time to act is now—before it’s too late. Financing for Adaptation Strategies should be prioritized to collectively build towards resilience. statistics sourced from : Botswana Government Official Channels Image source : Canva Stock Image. #Botswana #Sustainability #ClimateChange #Resilience #floodlist #Botswanafloods #flooding
