After a successful launch of the BSE Sustainability Disclosure Guidance on the 8th August 2024, the BSE continues to hold stakeholder engagements. The post launch engagements started with a Breakfast Seminar on 11th November and concluded with a training workshop on the 12th November 2024. One of the key questions from the participants was "where do we start?" I noted from the discussions that there needs to be more direction ad understanding as to "why" companies are doing this and "who" is responsible to initiate, implement and oversee the sustainability narrative and supporting processes. Key takeaways: 1. It got me thinking. Is the "G" in the ESG effective ? Most boards have not effectively taken up the sustainability conversation. I picked that reporting is more of a "tick box" exercise as the conversations are picked up quite late in the year as the reporting period gets close. To move away from the "tick box" exercise, Sustainability should be included in the initial strategy and business model planning stages such that it is embedded in the daily reporting and monitoring. The dermination of materiality from the onset, the setting up of the metrics and the data collection will inform the reporting on a daily basis such that it does not come out as an afterthought at the end of the year. 2. Another challenge is the determination of where to place the Sustainability responsibility within the Executive functions to ensure that it is well taken of and addressed well. 3. Effective oversight is critical. Is there a Board Committee that deals with the Sustainability approach of the company?The Committee will then feed information into the Board Agenda and subsequently, reporting. However, what I have noted from experience is that sustainability matters are not given ample time and opportunity by the boards. They remain a "by the way" agenda item, and that is if someone eventually brings it up. In conclusion, the "G" in the ESG is the driver of the "S" and the "E". This demands a Board which has the requisite skills, experience and expertise and is awake to the issues at hand.It is imperative that the governance aspect is strong and effective to enable a total culture change in the way sustainability issues are approached.
