As we continue to celebrate Black History Month, today we honour a great scientific hero: Dr. Clement Courtenay Ligoure. Dr. Ligoure was the first black physician in the country – licensed in Nova Scotia. Denied hospital privileges because he was Black, Dr. Ligoure found another way to serve his community, opening a private practice in his home in Halifax. Dr. Ligoure’s clinic treated patients injured in the Halifax Explosion on December 6, 1917, where at least 1,782 people were killed and approximately 9,000 injured. Today is the International Day of Women and Girls in Science – a day to promote full and equal access to, and participation in, science for women and girls. At Acuitas, we work to do this every day.
