It's been a busy fall so far! Albion Neighbourhood Services has been working with partners all over the city to hold community consultations on the 2025 City of Toronto budget. At every session so far, people are expressing many concerns, especially about the state of services and cost of living. We will ensure that all of this feedback is delivered to the City of Toronto and Mayor Olivia Chow to the priorities of residents in our most underserved communities are on the agenda. Yesterday, BGC East Scarborough, hosted our Prime Minister, Justin P. Trudeau and Members of Parliament including John McKay, Jenna Sudds Chrystia Freeland and Hon. Marci Ien for their most recent announcement on their National School Food Program of 1 Billion Dollars invested into food programs to support nearly 400,000 additional students each year. Our CEO, Utcha Sawyers, was honoured to speak before our nation to share the importance of food security in Canada. She shared that 1 in 4 children suffer from food insecurity, and with Galloway having some of the highest poverty rates in Canada, and for some, the food they receive at BGC East Scarborough may be the only meal they have for the day. Our commitment to food security has been a growing area for many years and continues to sit as one of our main priorities for our community. In addition to this eventful day, our Kitchen Lead, Jason Simpson had the opportunity to support our Members of Parliament with the cutting of fruits and veggies for our children in program. Announcing our $1.4M Commitment to BGC Canada to Combat Youth Food Insecurity Nationwide.   As we continue our long-standing 20-year partnership with BGC Canada, we are proud to officially announce goeasy’s “Feed their Future” program in support of BGC Canada’s Food Fund. This commitment comes with a $1.4 million donation over three years that will provide 350,000 meals to youth who are part of the Clubs.   As inflation continues to exacerbate widespread food insecurity, BGC’s work is getting significantly harder. The BGC Canada Food Fund provides foundational food support for Clubs by covering the operating costs associated with food delivery and programming, teaching food literacy and nurturing community gardening programs while supporting families experiencing food insecurity.   Last year, we reached our milestone of remodeling 100 BGC kitchens, signifying the end of a 10-year and $2.5 million commitment. To continue our partnership with BGC Canada, we looked at how we could make the biggest impact going forward based on the current needs of BGC’s communities.   “We are extremely proud of what we have accomplished together over the past twenty years but know there is still much more work to be done.
