Today, Executive Director David Arbuckle, MPA delegated at the Standing Committee on Justice Policy regarding Bill 194, Strengthening Cyber Security and Building Trust in the Public Sector Act, 2024. Overall, the Bill is a good first step towards enhancing digital security and establishing trust across public sector institutions, though there are opportunities for improvement. On behalf of members of local government professionals, David highlighted: • The interconnectedness between cybersecurity, AI, and privacy protection and the need to modernize the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (MFIPPA) to reflect this connection. • The differences in municipal digital maturity, capacity, and resources that need to be considered in the development of regulations. • That municipalities and their staff will need adequate guidance and resources to support the implementation of requirements. • That the legislation should contain more information about responsible use and trustworthy AI principles. • Regulations should be developed in collaboration with affected stakeholders including municipalities. Last week, I completed the AMCTO-Ivey Canadian Municipal Leadership Accelerator course at Ivey Business School. It was an amazing experience where I had the opportunity to connect with colleagues from different municipalities, build valuable relationships, and improve my leadership skills. The program encouraged us to think critically and strategically about our roles as municipal leaders. I'm excited to use these new insights to drive positive change and foster collaboration within my team at the City of Vaughan. Thank you to AMCTO and Ivey Business School for this incredible opportunity. #Leadership #Networking #ProfessionalDevelopment #MunicipalLeadership #IveyBusinessSchool #AMCTO
