At the APEC Ministerial Meetings in Lima, Peru, the Pacific Economic Cooperation Council released its annual State of the Region Report 2024, which outlines the economic outlook, top risks to growth, and policy priorities for the Asia-Pacific. The report underscores the need for adaptive strategies in light of economic uncertainty, aging populations, and environmental challenges, urging APEC member economies to take collective action. Key Findings from the PECC 2024 Report: 💵 Economic Outlook: Asia-Pacific economies are projected to grow by 3.4% in 2024, with gradual deceleration expected. Inflation rates should stabilize, but food and housing costs could threaten low-income households. 📉 Top Risks to Growth: The primary threats to economic growth include escalating geopolitical tensions, rising protectionism, and climate change. The report also cites the region's aging population as a growing concern for fiscal sustainability and productivity. 👴 Aging Populations and Economic Impact: Rapid aging is expected to strain healthcare systems and pension funds. Without action, PECC anticipates workforce shortages, especially in sectors like healthcare and IT. Recommendations include increasing female labor participation, promoting skilled immigration, and investing in workforce reskilling. ☀️ Climate Change and Supply Chain Resilience: Natural disasters are now a significant economic risk. The report calls for APEC economies to adopt more resilient, green supply chains and emphasizes support for the region’s goals to reduce emissions and increase renewable energy use. 🤖 Technological Change and Artificial Intelligence: AI and rapid technological advancements require robust policy responses. PECC advocates for a collaborative regulatory framework, social safety nets, and upskilling initiatives to address potential job displacement. #APEC Priorities: The top priorities identified include ameliorating trade conflicts, advancing the Free Trade Area of the Asia-Pacific (FTAAP) vision, and addressing technological and demographic shifts. The report praises APEC’s cooperative approach as essential for managing these issues in a balanced and inclusive manner. Thank you to APF Canada’s network of experts for participating in the survey, and a special thanks to CANCPEC member and APFC Distinguished Fellow Sharon Zhengyang Sun for her contributions as part of PECC’s Editorial Committee. Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada reposted this
Independent Senator and Economist. Chair, Collège des administrateurs de sociétés Co-Chair, Canada-ASEAN inter-parliamentary friendship group .
As co-Chair of Canada-ASEAN Inter-parliamentary Friendship Group, I had the honour and privilege yesterday to share the podium with Canada’s Minister of international trade, the Honorable Mary Ng and Vietnam’s Minister of Industry and trade, the Honorable Nguyen Hong Dien, at the Vietnam-Canada Business Forum in Vancouver. On the margins of the CPTPP commission meetings held in Vancouver, this event was organized by the Vietnam Trade Office in collaboration with the Canada-ASEAN Business Council and Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada. It brought together leaders from energy and manufacturing and explored how FTAs (like the CPTPP) can strengthen Canada-Vietnam supply chain connectivity. The current threat from President-Elect Trump to impose a potential 25% tariff on Canada and Mexico has just confirmed one more time the necessity for Canada to diversify our trade relationship! Thus, diversifying in the ASEAN region can give Canadian businesses interesting opportunities. #VietnamCanadaForum #GlobalTrade #EnergySector #Manufacturing #SupplyChain #CPTPP #InternationalBusiness #VietnamCanadaRelations #ASEAN #trade
