🌍 Hot off the Podcast Press! Rebecca Pincus and Andrea Charron recently joined Arctic 360's 'Breaking the Ice' hosts for a discussion about Canada-US Arctic Maritime cooperation. With the US elections in the rear-view mirror and a new incoming administration - this discussion is a timely one. Some highlights from our conversation: 🌐 Canada-US Collaboration on Arctic Boundaries • The U.S. Extended Continental Shelf initiative. • The international scientific research and cooperation behind it all. • What it may or may not mean for Canada, Canada's own submission to UNCLOS, the US not being a signatory, and US- Canada overlapping claims in the Beaufort Sea. 🌐 Arctic Sovereignty & Geopolitical Pressures: • Maritime interests of non-Arctic states • Canada's international legal position on the NWP • Russia's strategic use of lawfare around its own Arctic maritime region • Potential for Arctic deep-sea mining 🌐 Indigenous involvement: • Long standing U.S. collaboration with Native Alaskans on scientific research. • Inuit involvement in scientific research, and policy development in the Canadian North • The role of the Indigenous Permanent Participants in the Arctic Council • The ICC's ongoing success through its international participation and engagement in matters of Arctic international maritime law and regulation 🌐 Looking ahead: There is much at stake and US-Canada Arctic maritime cooperation is an imperative. #arctic #maritime #UNCLOS #northamericanarctic #arcticsecurity #NORAD Jaiden Stevens Nicole Butler Nazia Shah Jessica M. Arctic 360 reposted this
This highlight reel features Helene Scherling Olsen of our Arctic 360 panel. My take away message is that the while the world needs the Arctic and the Arctic needs the world, northern communities need to be at the centre of all discussions.
Highlights from the #BusinessForum2024 😎 A big thank you to all of the Business Forum participants for making the launch of this new initiative such a great success! Your expertise and engagement made this gathering inspiring for everyone involved. What were some of your biggest takeaways on the future of #business in the #Arctic?

Time for Canada to build its own Arctic subsea fibre cable. Northerners deserve to have affordable and reliable connectivity, building strong economies require high speed connectivity, and securing Canada’s North is hard to imagine without it.
Connectivity equals sovereignty in the Arctic. If can also advance reconciliation and social cohesion. Investment in subsea cables to connect our north should be a priority for both national security and social policy reasons. My op-ed in The Hill Times today.

On our recent Arctic 360 'Breaking the Ice' Podcast Episode we welcomed two distinguished guests: David Thompson and @Charles McNeely for an engaging discussion on Canada’s pressing #infrastructure needs. David brings a wealth of experience from his role managing real property infrastructure investments for Canada’s Department of National Defence/Ministère de la défense nationale and Charles, who is the Chairperson for the sahtu secretariat Incorporated, offered valuable insights on its mandate and the crucial decision-making processes that impact Arctic communities. - Both emphasized the critical role of collaboration in advancing #Arctic infrastructure. - They highlighted the need for strong partnerships between Indigenous - communities, governments, and private sectors to ensure projects like the Mackenzie Valley Highway succeed. - Charles noted the importance of the youth in the North’s future: “We talk about our youth all the time here in the Sahtú…they are our future” . - David echoed this sentiment, stressing that “Canada’s future is dependent on the North… with tremendous opportunity to be prosperous under the right economic circumstances and investments going forward” . - Although challenges remain—such as funding uncertainties and navigating multi-stakeholder projects—clear communication and unified efforts are essential for building a prosperous and sustainable future in the North. https://lnkd.in/gYWYCcRe Jaiden Stevens Nicole Butler Nazia Shah Madeleine Redfern Peter Garapick Hugh Short Nauja Bianco Darrell Beaulieu John English Jessica M. 🌐 Unlocking the Potential of the North American Arctic: Bridging Business, Innovation, and Policy 🌐 Arctic 360 and Davie recently co-hosted the Session 'North American Arctic Trade and Business Cooperation', as part of the Arctic Circle Assembly’s new @Arctic Business Forum. Less well-defined than the Nordic Arctic, the North American Arctic remains an underdeveloped construct and recognizing it as an economic region is in its infancy. However, geopolitical shifts are lending to an increased desire to better define the region and strengthen North American Arctic cooperation. One area that is leading the way is in the economic realm where efforts to strengthen business cooperation and trade are robust. Today, the Northern regions of the North American Arctic are comprised of many small companies and a few very big players. Yet, small and large companies are necessary for the growth and existence of a strong, diverse, and well-functioning northern economy. Our Session focused on what is needed for Northern companies, the North American Arctic economy, and the Arctic region at large to unlock its potential and capitalize on the changing geopolitics and accompanying private sector needs. Some of our key takeaways: - Anchor Tenant Relationships in the Arctic: Large corporations like Northwestel and defence partners can serve as 'anchors', boosting regional growth by attracting smaller, specialized businesses. Fostering symbiotic relationships that ensure economic diversity and resilience are key. - Public-Private-Indigenous Partnerships: There is an urgent need for robust Public-Private-Indigenous equity partnerships to fuel innovation in dual-use technologies like cold-weather infrastructure and supply chain logistics. The ICE Pact provides an interesting model. Could it evolve into a blueprint for enabling sustainable, collaborative growth? - The Role of Government in Business Development: Entities like CanNor in Canada and NALIK in Greenland are critical to shaping business policies and supporting Arctic companies. Ensuring they have the tools to advance regional trade is critical. - An Arctic Industry Days: Arctic360 has created a dedicated platform for convening Arctic trade counsellors and business leaders with the aim to strengthen trade and business cooperation. An Arctic Industry Days could compliment this ongoing effort by spotlighting business opportunities, and particularly across the North American Arctic. Initiatives such as these and other ideas such as an Arctic trade desk could be the key for the development of a cohesive North American Arctic industrial policy that can unlock the region’s global economic potential. 📣 Reflecting on 10 Years of Arctic Economic Cooperation 📣 At this year’s Arctic Circle Assembly, Arctic 360 hosted a session titled “10 Years of Arctic Economic Cooperation: The Arctic Economic Council.” Ten years ago, Canada launched the Arctic Economic Council to help support the ongoing efforts of the Arctic Council. We reflected on economic growth, trade, and connectivity in the Arctic over the past decade and what is needed for the decade to come: 🔹 Ten years ago: Economic growth and trade was hindered by insufficient connectivity, lack of overall infrastructure and accompanying investments. The prevailing assumption then was that economic activities in the North are naturally destined for southern capitals. 🔹 Today: A period of acceleration of Innovation (from IoT to AI), geopolitical uncertainty and realignments, and increasing focus on regional trade alliances and shipping routes. Efforts are underway to advance east-west trade north of 60, often they are led by Indigenous owned corporations and Indigenous led governments. Ensuring that the North is not left out and leveraging advancements to the benefit and prosperity of the region and Northern communities requires continued attention to developing robust physical and digital Northern infrastructure. 🔹 Looking ahead: Clear strategies and targeted investments are needed. Accelerating North American Arctic cooperation. Outstanding question: who should spearhead this planning and where; what role do regional strategies and organizations like the Arctic Economic Council (AEC) play in advancing this mission: Mads Qvist Frederiksen Paul Barrett Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency/ Agence canadienne de développement économique du Nord Curtis Shaw Helene Scherling Olsen Christian Keldsen Jessica M.
