    RIAs are already expert at digital marketing... ...Shhhh, it's really just portfolio management. However, there's a few key stumbling blocks that most of the RIA world needs a hand with. And it's these stumbling blocks that have largely contributed to organic growth rates trending in the wrong direction. The issue? The digital marketing portfolio of most RIAs is poorly balanced. The result? The RIA industry as a whole is: A. Generating awareness and building demand for their indirect and substitute competitors; and,
 B. Failing to adequately capture demand (book qualified meetings, build pipeline, improve close rates and pipeline velocity). I know B. above problem feels familiar, but A. is a symptom that lurks below the surface, that most don't even realize is there. Swipe the carousel and I'll break it all down for you.     Big conferences kinda suck. (If your goal is to deepen relationships) You might cross paths with some key folks once or twice. You might even get a long convo over dinner and drinks one night. But usually, that's about as deep as it gets. It's fun AF. But it kinda feels like skating around on the surface. RIA Edge West was NOT like that at all. If you were there to connect and deepen, you got to do that BIG time. It was EASY for the folks who gravitated towards each other to spend TONS of time together. And if you know me, you know I like a good hi five, a solid fist bump, a firm-ass hand shake, and a big warm hug. And this event had this in buckets. It was oozing with dap. I felt like I got to know so many different people, so much better. And I could see and feel that that sentiment was shared by all in attendance.   • Rich media investments should come AFTER you've got proven performanc from your digital marketing portfolio. High-calibre corporate video and photo can be FANTASTIC. It can seriously BOOST performance across channels. But it will struggle to SPARK performance. If invest in rich media too soon... If you don't have a portfolio that's already performing... Your big rich media investment will be all for naught. To drive a respectable return, you MUST integrate it with an already high-performing digital marketing portfolio. →Bump conversion rates by publishing your beautiful explainer videos on high-converting landing pages that are already being fed with qualified traffic →Drive likeability and trust by editing your beautiful, search optimized, fast loading website with climbing visitor metrics to include pictures of your team. →Improve ad performance and the "pre-suasion" factor by picking your highest-performing ad creative and integrating your new media portfolio →And drive awareness, findability, trust, and the Zero moment of truth, by uploading your gorgeous new assets to your previously optimized digital listings. But if your firm hasn't nailed the fundamentals? If you don't have a portfolio that's already delivering proven ROI? And if you have no plan for how to use this new media besides "put it on the website"? Then you've got a classic "cart before the horse" situation. Your firm will be destined for poor performance, or even negative ROI.   • Imagine spending $30,000 on business cards... ...and not handing them out. This is what most small firms do with their website upgrades. SURE, spend that $30k with a leading design and development agency to build the best-looking site in town. But you must also make investments to: →drive traffic to the site →improve site conversion rate →track form and call conversions →remarket more affordably to your visitors →generate SEO articles to build domain authority →ensure the site loads quickly on desktop and mobile →put features in place that the search algorithms reward →integrate converted contacts with your CRM and sales process.... Skipping these investments is a surefire path to becoming jaded on digital marketing. Them: "We tried digital marketing, it didn't produce leads or deals." Us: "What did you try?" Them: "We spent a TON of money on an awesome new website" Us: "Lemme guess, no leads, no traffic, Russian bots in the form submissions?" Them: "Yes!"   • RIA convinced that inorganic growth is the only way to scale? You've likely caught yourself in some, or all of these pitfalls. The first pitfall is neglecting the fundamentals of a strong online presence, especially sad because of how easy this is to remedy. Ignoring the fundamentals causes poor performance, or even severe business harm. The fundamentals include (but are not limited to): →Valuable online offers →Efforts to boost domain authority →Solid digital reputation management →Accurate business information across platforms →Strong email sender reputation + proper DNS records →Effective use of analytics, tagging, tracking, and remarketing →Ad best practices, like directing ads to high-converting pages BONUS for RIAs/IARs trying to drive Linkedin performance: →Smart social content (i.e. not pissing off the algorithm) ↳Imagine if we posted up in your lobby with a billboard for your direct competitor? ↳Constantly posting AdvisorStream articles or YouTube links will get you the algorithmic boot out the door. Overlooking these fundamentals is like building an office on quicksand. Sadly, skipping these is the default for most small firms, but it doesn't have to be this way for your firm.
