This time last week, Smart Energy Week and the H2 & FC EXPO (International Hydrogen & Fuel Cell Expo) were wrapping up in Tokyo. It was great to have #AVLFCC PEM electrolyzer and Gen 1 fuel cell stacks featured in the AVL booth. Thanks to everyone who stopped by for a visit, and to show organizers for putting on a great event! 🙏   Our colleagues, Karina Khartanovich, EIT and Paul Mann, P.Eng., were on site, discussing our technology and meeting with colleagues, suppliers, and current and new customers. They kept us in the loop daily, with trip reports often highlighting Japan’s impressive advancements in hydrogen technology. ⚡💧Team AVLFCC’s latest technology innovation is our AEE-1 PEM electrolyzer stack - a platform that’s already met the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) 2026 targets for electrolyzer stack efficiency! The stack delivers 47 kWh/kg H₂ (73% LHV) at 30 bar and is one of the reasons #AVLFCC was recently named @AVL’s Global Centre of Excellence in #PEMEL and #AEMEL stack design.   We designed, built, and tested this innovative electrolyzer stack solution in 12 months, leveraging our deep experience in high-volume automotive engineering. The Super Bowl of hockey took place last week in Burnaby, when AVLFCC temporarily traded away lab coats for hockey sticks for our annual Winter Classic Hockey tournament.   Great energy, solid teamwork, and (mostly) accurate shots on goal meant Team Jamie, Owen & Steven took away the winner's medals.    p.s. This year’s Hydrogen & Fuel Cell Seminar in Long Beach showcased exciting innovations from across the hydrogen ecosystem. Amy Nelson was there, catching up with colleagues and friends from around the world and to talk all things #AVLFCC, from our plug-and-play and custom fuel cell and electrolyzer stack solutions to our engineering and testing services! Amy reported the technical agenda was robust and varied, with a good balance of focus between fuel cell and electrolyzer technologies, and highlighted interesting plenary sessions from New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) and Toyota Motor Corporation, both affirming their ongoing commitment to #hydrogen. Amy highlighted the continued strong interest in heavy-duty fuel cell applications for the trucking industry, and also gave a shout-out to Hygreen Energy for their engaging and inspiring talk about electrolysis and what can be learned about China, the world’s largest market for hydrogen solutions. 🎉 Happy New Year from Team AVLFCC! 🎉 To kick off 2025, here are a few memories and highlights from last year, along with some teasers for the year ahead.   ✨ We completed successful testing of our next-generation fuel cell stack at our state-of-the-art lab in Burnaby in May. This new design meets market demand for increased power density which is especially important for customers looking to use hydrogen fuel cells in high-performance mobility and aviation applications.   ✨ Recently, #AVL signed a major agreement with Dongfang Electric Corporation in Chengdu, China. #AVLFCC is looking forward to being able to contribute our expertise to future collaborative projects.     ✨ @AVL has officially recognized #AVLFCC as the Global Centre of Excellence in electrolyzer stack design! Global demand for green hydrogen is driven by the push for decarbonization to meet net-zero targets, its role in enabling renewable energy storage, and its potential to decarbonize hard-to-abate sectors like heavy industry, transportation, and energy-intensive processes. Growing policy support, technological advancements, and corporate sustainability goals further accelerate its adoption.   🔜 2025 is going to be a transformative year for our electrolyzer development activities and we’re focused on expanding our #ELX portfolio to include stacks for AEM electrolyzers.   🔜 Decarbonizing the aviation sector will continue to be a hot topic next year. The applications for fuel cells in aviation are many and varied and we are excited about the work we are doing to respond to customer and market requests for technology solutions.   🔜 Our team is excited to continue our work to support innovative and forward-thinking companies around the world!
