  • ICYMI: January is Walk Your Dog Month! A time to lace up one's shoes and hit the pavement with our furry best friends! 🐶 There are benefits to both pet owners AND dogs to maintaining a regular walking routine. For dogs: 🐾 Physical health: Regular walks during colder months keep your dog active, preventing weight gain and maintaining joint health. Walking helps to burn calories and manage weight, strengthen muscles, improving mobility and endurance, and stimulate digestion and improve overall metabolic function. 🐾 Mental stimulation: Winter landscapes provide new sights, smells, and textures, offering sensory enrichment for your dog. Snow-covered trails, crisp air, and different scents keep their minds engaged and prevent boredom. 🐾 Bonding time: Walks are an excellent way to strengthen the bond between you and your dog. In cold months, the shared activity fosters trust and companionship, creating lasting memories. 🐾 Boosting immune health: Regular activity, even in the cold, helps maintain your dog’s immune system, reducing susceptibility to illnesses often associated with a sedentary lifestyle during winter. 🐾 Beating the winter blues: Much like humans, dogs can experience the winter blues. Fresh air, daylight exposure, and physical activity can improve your dog’s mood while benefiting your mental health as well. • January is celebrated as Walk Your Dog Month, a time dedicated to promoting the physical and mental well-being of our canine companions through regular exercise. Dog walking during colder months offers unique benefits for both dogs and their owners, particularly in regions like British Columbia and across Canada. As part of encouraging pet owners to get out and walk, we also wanted to recognize the role of dog physiotherapy in maintaining and enhancing your dog’s health, especially during increased physical activity. Animal rehabilitation services like those offered by Boundary Bay Veterinary Specialty Hospital (BBVSH) provide tailored physiotherapy programs to ensure your dog stays active and healthy throughout the year. (And we provide services to cats, too!) So bundle up, leash up, and step out to make this Walk Your Dog Month a meaningful and healthy experience for you and your furry friend! • Q&A: What do our Internal Medicine Specialists do? Internal medicine specialists are trained to treat the most serious diseases and health problems that affect pets. Our specialists are experienced with finding a diagnosis in challenging cases and have an arsenal of specialized diagnostic tools and methods available, in addition to collaborating with our team of board-certified specialists in critical care, surgery, cardiology, neurology, and oncology. They are capable of managing patients who have multiple disorders or diseases that do not respond well to standard protocols. Reaching a diagnosis and caring for a sick pet can be scary, frustrating and confusing. Our internal medicine specialists are dedicated to allaying fears and helping clients to make sense of their pet’s options and ongoing care. • #DYK January 2nd is National Pet Travel Safety Day. If you're hitting the road with your furry family member(s), here are some essential tips to ensure a safe and stress free journey: 🐾 For secure transport, use a quality carrier or harness. 🐾 Bring plenty of food, water, familiar items and any medications needed. 🐾 If crossing the Canadian border into the US, dogs must have a valid rabies vaccination certificate (per CDC guidelines). Cats do not require rabies vaccinations but should have health records. 🐾 If flying, check the specific pet policies of your airline for breed, size and crate requirements. Policies may vary. 🐾 Never leave your pet(s) unattended in a vehicle, even for a brief period. For more detailed information on bringing your pets into the US, check out our blog on the latest CDC requirements: https://lnkd.in/g-f2ysdG #nationalpettravelsafetyday #momentsmatter #vetmedicine #vetemergencycare #vetspeciality #vetspecialists

  • Frequently Asked Questions About Sedation We know that the thought of sedation can be unsettling for pet owners. Our team will keep you informed every step of the way and care for your pet as if it were our own. 🐾 Why does my pet need sedation? 🐾 Sometimes, procedures require sedation to ensure accuracy and your pet's safety. It helps us perform exams efficiently and minimizes stress for both you and your pet. For some procedures like cardiac exams (ECGs and echocardiograms), sedation isn’t always necessary. We use low-stress handling techniques and, in some cases, pre-medication to keep your pet calm and comfortable. 🐾 Is sedation safe? 🐾 Most pets tolerate sedation very well. While there are potential risks, our team is highly trained and skilled in administering and monitoring sedation and anesthesia. We prioritize your pet’s well-being throughout the process. 🐾 What can I do to make my pet’s vet visit less stressful? 🐾 Giving pre-visit medication (trazodone, gabapentin) can make your pet’s visit less stressful. Our specialists are happy to discuss your options and to answer any questions or concerns you may have about sedation, or any other aspect of your pets’ care. #momentsmatter #vetmedicine #vetemergencycare #vetspeciality #vetspecialists
