Today is International Mother Language Day! Languages carry identity, culture, and history. Across Canada, over 70 Indigenous languages are spoken, each representing a unique worldview and connection to the land. However, the number of Indigenous people who speak their mother tongue is declining—a 7.1% drop since 2016. Despite these challenges, language revitalization efforts are growing. More than a quarter (27.7%) of Indigenous language speakers in 2021 learned their language as a second language, showing a commitment to keeping these languages alive. Some, like Haisla, Halkomelem, Heiltsuk, and Michif, have even seen a resurgence, growing by over 33% since 2016! At BCIHS, we celebrate the resilience of Indigenous languages and the communities working to strengthen them. On this International Mother Language Day, let’s honour and support language revitalization efforts—because every word spoken is a step toward cultural survival and strength. #InternationalMotherLanguageDay #IndigenousLanguages #LanguageRevitalization #CulturalResilience #bcindigenoushousing #bchousing #indigenoushousing #bcihs #indigenous

CEO Brenda Knights and Board Member Justin Molander attended a KPU faculty event, exploring how Indigenous ways of knowing can be woven into organizations. BCIHS values its partnership with KPU, including our collaboration on the Farm School project, which supports tenants with food security. We look forward to building on this relationship as KPU continues its commitment toward putting reconciliation into action. #ReconciliationInAction #IndigenousKnowledge #FoodSecurity #bcihs #bcindigenoushousing #bchousing #indigenoushousing #indigenous

Paddles up 🤲🏼🤲🏼
Now is the time to listen, learn, and keep going. The recent dismantling of DEI programs is a reminder that progress is never guaranteed. It’s disheartening, but it’s also a call to action. Len Pierre reminds us that Indigenous communities have endured generations of hardship by holding onto their teachings, their culture, and their resilience. Their wisdom reminds us that transformation is a long journey, not a quick fix. As allies, we have a choice: Do we stop when the path gets harder, or do we keep going? Do we stand alongside those fighting for equity, or do we step back when it’s no longer convenient? Now is not the time to retreat—it’s time to dig deeper, to support, to amplify. Change happens because people refuse to give up. 💬 What does showing up look like for you right now? Let’s talk. Today, on World Day of Social Justice, we recognize the urgent need to combat poverty, social exclusion, and unemployment—challenges that disproportionately impact Indigenous communities. Social justice is more than an ideal; it is a necessary foundation for peace, security, and reconciliation. This year’s theme, “Strengthening a Just Transition for a Sustainable Future,” highlights the need to ensure that shifts toward sustainability include Indigenous voices and rights. A just transition means economic transformation that respects Indigenous sovereignty, protects our lands, and creates meaningful opportunities for our people—through green jobs, community-led solutions, and policies that prioritize equity. At BCIHS, we are committed to fostering safe, affordable, and culturally appropriate housing for Indigenous individuals and families. Housing is a fundamental human right, and ensuring access to it is a critical step toward social justice. As we reflect on today’s significance, we call on governments, organizations, and individuals to work together in centering Indigenous perspectives, dismantling barriers, and ensuring that the journey toward a sustainable future leaves no one behind. Together, we can build a future where environmental integrity and social equity go hand in hand. #SocialJusticeDay #20February #IndigenousRights #JustTransition #Reconciliation #bcihs #bcindigenoushousing #bchousing #indigenoushousing

Happy Family Day from BCIHS! Family is at the heart of Indigenous culture, shaping our identity, strengthening our spirits, and providing a deep sense of belonging. In many Indigenous communities, family extends beyond blood relations—it includes our Elders, kin, and community members who support and uplift one another. Today, we celebrate the families—biological and chosen—that sustain and empower us. May we continue to honor these relationships, embrace our traditions, and support one another in the journey toward holistic wellness. #FamilyDay #IndigenousCulture #CommunityStrength #bcihs #bcindigenoushousing #bchousing #indigenoushousing #elders #uncles #aunties #children #kin

Honoring the Cree Code Talkers on World Radio Day On World Radio Day, we celebrate the power of communication and recognize the Cree Code Talkers, whose unbreakable language helped secure Allied victories in WWII. Unlike the well-known Navajo Code Talkers, many Cree heroes remain unidentified due to wartime secrecy. But warriors like Charles Tomkins, Walter McDermott, Peter Tomkins, John Smith, and Archie Plante played a vital role in protecting military messages. Today, we honor their bravery and the strength of Indigenous languages. Their legacy must never be forgotten. #WorldRadioDay #CreeCodeTalkers #IndigenousHistory #HonoringOurHeroes #bcindigenoushousing #bcihs #bchousing #indigenoushousing
