2025 has been off to a rough start for people who are vulnerable to our current intersecting crises: drug poisoning, housing, homelessness. To see the City of New Westminster Council endorse the counterpoint to the 2025 brand yesterday was welcome news in the community housing sector. In a plan that has extensively engaged non-profit partners, health care professionals, other jurisdictions, residents and businesses, the City of New Westminster has developed a roadmap for the City's response to the multiple crises facing residents - homelessness and the drug poisoning crisis amongst them. Included in the plan are better approaches to connecting people to services, improved harm reduction, fast tracking the construction of supportive housing with wrap-around supports, and a lot more. No one has ever said that governing is easy, but this the kind of leadership that our region needs. New West staff, Mayor and Council are to be commended for putting in the work to engage across sectors and develop a plan in collaboration with residents and experts in the field. Read more in the Mayor's post, which includes a link to the staff report. 👇 https://lnkd.in/gdd8GAai

🏡 What happens when we protect affordable homes? Lives change. Here's an inspiring example of how expanding the community housing sector can make a difference: In 2024, Catalyst Community Developments Society acquired Parkwood Gardens in Burnaby with the Rental Protection Fund's support. This secured the affordability of 79 homes and a much-needed childcare facility. But their impact went beyond affordability. A resident soon shared a concern: her neighbour’s young child, who uses a wheelchair, had to be carried up a flight of stairs every day—along with their wheelchair—because the building lacked an accessible entry. Catalyst quickly took action. They installed a new wheelchair ramp, making life easier and safer for the family. They also began replacing deteriorating staircases to improve safety for all residents. 💡 Community-led housing isn’t just about keeping rents affordable—it’s about investing in people and ensuring that homes truly meet the needs of those who live in them. #CommunityHousing #ImpactStory #PositiveChange
