Blatchford Development Manager Tom Lumsden and Renewable Energy Systems Director Christian Felske recently welcomed over 20 attendees of CIMCO Refrigeration Inc.'s Innovation Day conference on a tour of Energy Centre One (EC-1) – the heart of Blatchford’s district energy sharing system. There, attendees got a firsthand look at the two large CIMCO heat pumps that help to effectively deliver renewable heating and cooling to the community’s homes. Tom and Christian also presented on Blatchford’s innovative vision, progress and district energy sharing system in a conference session at Ford Hall (Roger’s Place). Innovation Day brought together ice rink professionals from across the industry to learn about new technologies, case studies, trends and best practices. Funding from the Government of Canada’s Smart Renewables and Electrification Pathways Program (SREPs) will increase Blatchford’s capacity to generate renewable energy for our residents and businesses as the community grows. Why does this matter? About 40 per cent of Edmonton’s greenhouse gas emissions come from buildings. But in Blatchford, this major emissions source is significantly reduced by combining renewable energy generation with green-built homes. In fact, compared to homes in a typical community, Blatchford homes will emit about 75 per cent fewer greenhouse gas emissions. Along with all the construction happening in Blatchford, increasing the capacity of the District Energy Sharing System is another sign that this unique community – which just 10 years ago was still operating as a municipal airport – is really taking flight.
