We recently attended the Internet Identity Workshop in Mountain View California, and have some interesting observations… While it was somewhat informative, it was also filled with misinformation and agendas that reflect some Big Company thoughts on how they want things implemented. There were also some strange presentations related to digital credentials issuance, and others related to new versions of verifiable credentials and the verifier stack that is required to allow for these bespoke solutions to interoperate… (I have wanted to use bespoke for a while!) Firstly, one thing that is clear is that there is a general acceptance that mDLs or mDOCs are rolling out and they will exist and need to be accommodated. Google showed mDLs in their wallet applications. Now for the misinformation… “Bluetooth does not work” for in person ID Transactions. There was a lot of chatter, and naysaying about the capabilities of Bluetooth use for local verification. The proposed solution is a “cloud hop” between the browser and phone (or verifier device) which seems to assert that network connections are always available. Here is a learning moment, They are not! The fact that the general statement that Bluetooth does not work, flies in the face of our demo showing BLE being used between our eID-Me app and Google’s Verifier app… iOS to Android no less! The ISO mDL spec has a specification for secure pairing over BLE… I suggest some people read it and try it out, before saying it doesn’t work. So, can we agree that a local BLE service works, and “cloud hop” is not required? It would seem that cloud hop enables tracking of use, which is perhaps why some are pushing for it? On to tracking of use… and what to do about it. Bluink operates an IdP in Canada and federates all of our users’ decentralized IDs through that IdP, to relying parties who need verified ID information for compliance, security and fraud detection. We do not track any transactions… ever. Done… One proposal from some folks from Europe, who shall not be named (I’m not sure who they were), was to issue multiple mDL credentials to the wallet, like 50 of them!!! And then use them 1-time when presenting their ID. I found this to be a new level of absurdity. Take the concept of reusable digital ID and make them 1-time use. Enough said. We don’t agree with this approach. Lastly, selective disclosure. The new buzz is SD – JWT (Pronounced SD JOT)… Selective Disclosure in a JWT. Again, ISO specifies how to implement selective disclosure from an mDL… Bluink has implemented selective disclosure online and in person with eID-Me, and it works. No new specs required. My conclusion is that many seem to not know what is in the ISO mDL 18013-5 spec and are building new methods and specs (reinventing the wheel) to make their walled gardens and platforms more relevant and allow them to regain and retain control. The good news is mDLs are accepted, rolling out and in use. We're good with that. SB

Bluink is pleased to be attending the Internet Identity Workshop next week in Mountain View California. We will be showing our mDL reusable digital credential solutions, Identity Verification (IDV) for onboarding, interoperability with Google Verifier apps and more. We will also be discussing and demonstrating our Verifiable Credential PDF (VC PDF) technology, which binds a holder's identity with a PDF credential, such as a graduation diploma, or a security clearance... Old meets new in digital transformation! See you there. SB
