BRAIN CANCER CANADA'S REACTION TO THE MINISTER OF HEALTH'S RESPONSE TO PETITION E-5118: Just like funding for brain cancer research, therapies, and clinical trials, the Minister of Health’s response falls short. To-date, 1334 Canadians, from every province and territory across Canada, have signed petition e-5118 (open for signatures until January 2025), calling on the Government of Canada to: 🧠 increase funding for brain cancer research 🧠 work with provinces and territories to ensure that drugs, medical devices, and new therapies are accessible to brain cancer patients nationwide 🧠 remove red tape so brain cancer drugs can be approved more quickly. On November 25, 2024, the Minister of Health issued a response to the petition. Click the link to read the Minister's response: https://lnkd.in/gDSWuPSV While we appreciate the acknowledgment, it's clear that greater transparency and clarity is needed to overcome the barriers our community faces. Brain Cancer Canada is taking some time to prepare a formal response to the Minister. In the meantime, we invite you - members of the brain cancer community - to read the Minister’s response. We encourage you to help us by sharing your experiences below regarding any challenges/bureaucratic roadblocks you have faced as a patient or caregiver with regard to issues such as: ➡️ Access to treatments (ie: chemotherapy, immunotherapy, experimental therapy, inhibitors, optune, proton therapy) ➡️ Access to care (ie: surgery, radiation, imaging, rehab, social services) ➡️ Access to clinical trials YOUR experience paints a picture of where the system may fall short and how we can best advocate for the (basic) needs of brain cancer patients and their families. Thank you for your continued engagement and support as we work together to bring about positive change. Special thanks to Tammy Farand, Farands for the Fight, and MP Michael Cooper for your time and effort in drawing attention to this critical concern. Brain cancer patients and families deserve better Comments below or email cure@braincancercanada.ca #petitione5118

Power of 9 WRITTEN BY: Penn’s Mom, Catherine G. On April 30, 2021, our families' lives were shattered when we learned that our nearly four-year-old daughter, Penn, was diagnosed with brain cancer – she was among the 9 Canadians who receive this heartbreaking news every day. In the months that followed, Penn endured two craniotomies, 33 radiation treatments, and three rounds of chemotherapy. Despite her incredible courage and resilience, Penn lost her life on June 21, 2022. Every day since, I've wondered: What could her future have held if there were better treatments for pediatric brain cancer patients? Would she still love the colour blue? Would she have learned to ride her bike? Would she have continued to be a foodie, savouring okonomiyaki and cucumber with chili oil? What would she have worn on her first day of kindergarten? The pain of never knowing these answers is overwhelming. I became a Brain Cancer Canada engagement ambassador because of the unwavering commitment and dedication this organization has shown to families like ours. Their work is a lifeline for so many, and I wanted to do my part to support their mission. To honour Penn's memory and raise funds for critical research, I launched a Penn the Brave $9 challenge fundraising page. Though it won’t bring her back, my hope is that it will help raise awareness and contribute to advancing treatment options, so that one day, other families won’t have to face the same heartbreak. I chose $2400 as my goal, a number that represents Penn’s birthday—because her memory, and the fight for better outcomes, will never be forgotten. On National Philanthropy Day (NPD), we celebrate the extraordinary change that fundraising and philanthropy have helped to create in our world! The word philanthropy comes from Ancient Greek φιλανθρωπία (philanthrōpía), which translates to "love of humanity". philo - to love anthrōpos - humankind In the second century CE, Plutarch used the Greek concept of philanthrôpía to describe superior human beings. Today, Brain Cancer Canada recognizes the contributions of all the “superior human beings” who have helped us raise over 2.8 million dollars and have made it possible to award 19 innovative grants in brain cancer research. Thanks to philanthropy, a future without brain cancer is possible. Celebrate National Philanthropy Day with a Gift: https://lnkd.in/gDRtjGYq #NationalPhilanthropyDay #NPD
