  • When you think of love, your heart ❤️ might come to mind first. Love and belonging are core, basic, human needs. Love inspires us and motivates us to act and to move forward. Have you ever wondered what happens in the brain 🧠 when we feel love❤️? Love emerges from a complex interplay of neurochemical reactions, brain activity, and cognitive interpretations. It connects and grows across brain regions, including the amygdala, hippocampus, and prefrontal cortex: 🧠 Amygdala is responsible for your emotional response and forming emotional memories. 🧠 Hippocampus is responsible for processing emotions as well as learning and developing short-term memories into long-term ones. 🧠 Prefrontal cortex is responsible for executive function; it makes connections throughout your brain so you can plan, think, remember, and practice self-control. A brain tumour 🧠, malignant or non-malignant, can impair emotional connections, leaving individuals and their loved ones grappling and confused. The very essence of love - intimacy, affection, and attachment, can be altered or diminished by a brain tumour, highlighting the brain's critical role in our capacity to love and form relationships. The next time you feel love❤️, remember, we really have our brains to thank. #valentines #LoveComesFromTheBrain #brain #braintumours #primarybraintumours #accelerate #advocate #transform

  • There are over 120 different types of brain tumours. The majority of brain tumours are benign. Approximately 38% are malignant (cancerous). While all brain tumours can be life-altering, many people survive benign brain tumours and carry on with very productive lives. In some cases, they may not even require treatment.   The outcomes for malignant brain tumours (brain cancers) are far less optimistic - they are incurable, difficult to treat, and always lethal. They represent a severely underfunded area of research. Brain Cancer Canada is dedicated to raising funds for malignant brain tumours (brain cancers) because investing in innovative and promising #research is the only way to improve quality of life and survival rates. According to Dr. Sunit Das, Neurosurgeon at St. Michael's Hospital, “Brain Cancer Canada plays an important role in supporting researchers and clinicians by funding research that would otherwise not happen.” Thanks to the tremendous support of our donors, Brain Cancer Canada is investing in the work of doctors and scientists, like Dr. Das, who are committed to discovering improved treatment options for both pediatric and adult brain cancers. #braincancer #braincancerresearch #glioblastoma #dipg #accelerate #advocate #transform

  • Dear Family, Friends, Doctors, Donors & Supporters, On behalf of my entire family, including my mom and co-founder Yolanda Caruso, BCC Director Bruno Cunsolo, and Ambassador Marisa Cunsolo, I want to extend our heartfelt thanks for all the comfort and support you have shown us over the last week. Your kindness has truly meant the world to us during this difficult time, and we are grateful to have so much love by our side. As many of you know, 2 years after my brother’s diagnosis, my family launched Brain Matters in 2015 to address the fundraising gap for primary malignant brain tumour research with the goal of transforming (improving) the standard of care. Since then, with the tremendous support of Founding Sponsor, Scotia Wealth Management, the organization evolved into a national charity now known as Brain Cancer Canada (@braincancercanada) . As Chair, my drive to level the playing field for people diagnosed with brain cancer has always been strong – it has fueled my commitment over the last decade. However, on January 19, the day my 37-year-old brother took his last breath, something changed. His passing has ignited a wildfire within me, an even deeper resolve to continue this fight for all families, like mine, affected by this devastating disease. Alongside my amazing team, Brain Cancer Canada will push forward, relentlessly, and unapologetically, to give brain cancer patients the fair chance they deserve. For the past 10 years, I have honoured my brother’s life, now I will honour his memory. With immense gratitude and love, Angela Scalisi #braincancer #braincancerresearch #berniestrong #braincancercanada

  • With deep sorrow, Brain Cancer Canada announces the passing of Bernardo (Bernie) Scalisi on January 19, 2025 at the age of 37. Bernie, a son, brother, husband, and young father, courageously and remarkably LIVED with brain cancer for 12 years. Bernie’s diagnosis was the impetus for Brain Cancer Canada (formerly Brain Matters) to come into existence. His journey has inspired and continues to help patients and families across Canada in their own brain cancer experience. The depth of this impact will never be fully known. Brain Cancer Canada extends its deepest sympathies and heartfelt condolences to BCC Chair, Angela Scalisi and her family, and expresses its profound gratitude to the neurosurgeons, oncology teams, medical professionals, and caregivers who dedicate their lives to supporting people like Bernie. We will continue, in earnest, to raise and invest funds in brain cancer research. We can, and must, do more for brain cancer patients. • Hope is on the horizon for patients with lower grade gliomas (brain cancer) with a new drug that targets a specific mutation found in some brain cancers. Sunnybrook Health Sciences neuro-oncologist, Dr. James Perry and Steven Stefanidis visited CTV News Your Morning on January 13th to talk about Voranigo™, a new drug from  Servier Pharmaceuticals, also known by its generic name Vorasidenib. This therapy is approved for patients with confirmed Grade 2 Astrocytoma or Oligodendroglioma. You can watch the Your Morning segment on YouTube at https://lnkd.in/gDzws5WX Clinical trials have shown that Voranigo™ is effective at significantly delaying disease progression, with more tolerable side-effects than the current standard treatments offered to patients which include radiation and traditional chemotherapies. Servier Pharmaceuticals was granted approval by Health Canada | Santé Canada which confirmed the drug meets the safety and efficacy threshold for Canadians. The next step to ensure the drug becomes available to Canadian patients requires that a payer for the drug and reimbursement for the drug through each of the provincial and territorial drug plans is identified. Servier is now working with Canada's Drug Agency and other groups to secure a payer and determine how to gain reimbursement through drug plans. Brain Cancer Canada continues to follow the progress with Servier and is hopeful additional studies may be possible to expand the approval to include other patients who might benefit from Voranigo™. This extraordinary discovery is the result of research that began more than a decade ago, indicating that a future without brain cancer is possible with research and clinical trial investment. If you would like to play a part in funding promising brain cancer research, you can donate to Brain Cancer Canada: https://lnkd.in/g4Za4cB #hope #newdrug #Voranigo #Vorasidenib #braincancerclinicaltrial #braincancerresearch

Here is another wake up call for governments and funders of cancer research. Cancer rates are expected to nearly double by 2050. A lot of this increase will be fueled by low and middle income countries but high income countries will also see this increase due to an aging population. In Canada the situation is very dire if funders don't invest in new research and new therapeutics and we do not develop a meaningful longer-term multi-decade strategy - not piecemeal bandaid solutions. The ratio of working age people to retired/aged people will drop to nearly 2:1 by 2040's and beyond in Canada. Who is going to support all this added burden of cancer care on top of maintaining social programs?! We need to have visionary leadership in this country here that understands this and supports development of a national cancer plan involving investment in interception and prevention and better precision medicine biomarkers. At the rate we are going here we will fail unless we have visionary leadership and courageous leaders that speak out and are willing to challenge the status quo and change the impractical and inefficient way we do things in research and the way we fund things. We need a multi-decade Cancer Plan in Canada forged by new leaders that think out-of-the-box and not by the same old insecure people many of which block new ideas to protect their turf.
