James Matthews is a really special dad in our Brood. We've now got him locked in doing a monthly column with us on our blog, and we absolutely love having his voice - vulnerable, funny, and real. Read the latest post from James, about his first travelling experience with baby Louie!
It's a cliche for a reason: Stop and smell the roses along the way. It's exactly what I wished I did more on a recent trip to Europe--the first with our daughter, Louie. I am so grateful of my friends at Brood for the platform to unpack it: https://lnkd.in/gvqYFRR8

In Brood's latest newsletter, co-founder ✿ Gillian D. reflects on the end of her 10-year relationship and the journey of co-parenting. Last holiday season was the darkest time of her life, yet small moments of joy—decorating a tree, exploring Christmas lights, and snowy days with family—offered slivers of light. A year later, Gill shares a message of hope: healing isn’t linear, but community care and resilience make the journey lighter. Read more below.

✨ Our Year in Care: 2024 Highlights ✨ This year, our dedicated team of doulas and careworkers at Brood provided unparalleled support, compassion, and expertise to the families in our care. We are incredibly proud of what this year in doula care has accomplished: 👶 173 babies welcomed and cuddled into the world 🤱 180 labor journeys supported, hand-in-hand 🧷 23,958 diapers changed (yes, we counted!) 😴 6,129 hours of restorative sleep gifted to tired parents 🍽️ 2,390 nourishing meals prepared for growing families 🫧 3,294 loads of laundry to ease the daily load Because family care isn’t complete without furry friends: 🐾 101 pets snuggled and cared for too. Community care is transformative: This year, we invested $80K into the Brood Equity Fund to ensure care remains accessible and sustainable for all families. In total, our team delivered: 🕒 22,500 hours of doula care 📚 10,987 hours of family education and support None of this would be possible without our passionate doulas, our incredible families, and the belief in the value of care work. And don't forget three very inspired (and tired) founders 💫 Emma Devin Lizzy Karp and ✿ Gillian D. As we wrap up this remarkable year, we look forward to an even more connected and cared-for 2025. We have openings for January & February 2025! If you know a family who needs support, send them our way. #YearInReview #DoulaCare #CommunitySupport #Brood #CareWork

Our #1 most read blog post? Not surprisingly it's about how to get your doula care covered by insurance. More and more insurance carriers are beginning to offer coverage for doulas, who have specific trainings and certifications. Many of our Brood doulas fall into that category! Read the post for more information on how to get your care covered at the link in comments

Miscarriage & Loss is experienced by 10-20% of folks who embark on the pregnancy and conception journey. And whether you've experienced it yourself or not, you are surrounded by people who have. We don't often hear from the dad's or dads-to-be about their experience with loss, so we're grateful that James Matthews reached out to share his. It's important to remember that so many people are affected by loss, and their stories matter too. As a reminder, we are offering our one-of-a-kind Miscarriage & Early Loss Course for FREE until the end of October, so please share it with anyone you think might benefit from it. https://lnkd.in/gsvHmrv6
CW: miscarriage, early pregnancy loss. We were going to name her Ruby. At the time, I didn’t know exactly why—just liked the name. But, I know now that it’s because our journey was set out that we would lose Ruby en route to Louie. I was inspired by ✿ Gillian D.’s Brood Letter this month about raising awareness and opening up conversations about miscarriage and loss to write Katie and I’s story of loss, gain, and the importance of community. I’m so appreciative of the awesome team at Brood for inspiring me and hope you give if this a read if you feel up to it :)

When 10-20% of pregnancies end in miscarriage, why is this common experience still so fraught with shame and guilt?

🌟 A Milestone in Care and Commitment 🌟 We’re thrilled to share that Brood has provided over $1,000,000 in doula care to hundreds of families across the Lower Mainland, Squamish, and Victoria! This milestone highlights the increasing recognition of the value of doula support and reaffirms our commitment to investing in what matters most: our families, our care team, and our community. We do this by: ✨ Living Wage Commitment: As a certified Living Wage employer, we go beyond the standard to ensure our doulas are compensated fairly. We’re proud to support our team with flexible schedules that allow them to balance work and family life. ✨ Brood Equity Program: Offering low or no-cost care to families of all kinds and education for a spectrum of prenatal, pregnancy and postpartum experiences. ✨ Expert Training & Peer Support: Brood provides ongoing workshops and roundtables with experts, mentorship, and peer-to-peer support to empower our doulas with all the knowledge and skills they need to grow. We believe in investing in our team to continue delivering the best possible care while thriving – care workers that are well, lead to families that are well! ✨ High-Quality, Free Educational Support: From our Prenatal-in-a-Day course to resources on miscarriage, loss, and navigating the early days of parenthood, we provide families with free, evidence-based materials to help them feel informed and supported every step of the way. The momentum to hit this milestone in our second year of business has been made possible with the dedication of Emma Devin, ✿ Gillian D. and Lizzy Karp, our admin and marketing doula Karli Zucht, our incredible team of careworkers and doulas, support from founder peers and mentors, and guidance from our advisors, including: Marlon Thompson Vivian McCormick Paulina Cameron CPA, CA Raissa Espiritu Cameron Burke Matt Corker Therese Hayes and Heather Magee Here’s to continuing to grow, support, and uplift families together! #DoulaCare #CommunityFirst #BroodFamily #SupportingFamilies #MilestoneMoment
