It’s not about how impressive or funny or smart or athletic you are. Dr Van Sloan studied thousands of high school students across a variety of high schools to investigate what made popular kids popular. He had the kids ranked across all these schools and looked at traits and for patterns. One single variable held true across all the students. The most popular kids were the ones who had the longest list of people that they liked! One of the questions on the survey was, “Who do you like?” The most popular kids had the longest lists of people that they liked. When he looked at their day to day, they had micro-moments of liking, acknowledging and reaching out to people wherever they went. Their liking so many people in turn made them more likeable. Being likable is in our control. The best way to be impressive, to be likeable, is to help people impress you, to make them so liked that they begin to like you back. When we think that someone doesn’t like us, we shut down and become more unlikeable. Emotions mark things as good, bad or neutral. We build up memories of feelings and they help when we need to make a decision. Patients with lesions in the orbito-frontal cortex, which is involved in decision-making, are unable to make a decision. They can perform cost-benefit analyses, but every time they identify a cost, they recognize a new benefit. Working with these patients, neurobiologist Antonio Damasio discovered that they were missing the emotional memory that would make some aspect of the decision feel right or wrong and thus help them with making a choice. Such patients can spend hours with the simplest decisions. If you struggle a lot with taking decisions, becoming more aware of your thoughts and feelings is an area you could develop. Being aware of our emotions is not the same as being at the mercy of our emotions, in fact it is the antidote. #antoniodamasio #indecision #emotionalmemory #coaching #healthandwellness
