🤣 !! YOU CAN'T MAKE THIS STUFF UP !! 🤣   Notes from this month's staff meeting at your local health clinic..........   ▶ QUALITY ASSURANCE ➡ Dr. Kate reported that all the lip balms in the bowl in the lobby don't actually contain anything. No one knows how this happened, nor how long patients have been walking out the door with empty plastic tubes.   ▶ CULTURE OF EXCELLENCE ➡ A vote was taken – approved 10 to 1 – that the empty lip balms are "kind of funny". No corrective action planned.   ▶ EFFICIENCY IMPROVEMENT ➡ Barbra, the Office Manager, reported that the Efficiency & Productivity Handbook is now 80% complete and she will be requesting another 2-month extension next month.   ▶ IT MANAGEMENT ➡ A bug was discovered in the main server – a silver fish, which was squashed with a paper plate.   ▶ HUMAN RESOURCES ➡ New Employee # 3 suggested that team retention would improve if the others in the office would bother to learn his name. ▶ STAFF UPDATE ➡ Mary mentioned she is going to take a scheduled sick day "someday soon, like one of these mornings when the thought of driving here is just too f***ing much".   ▶ ADJOURNMENT ➡ The meeting was adjourned after 12 minutes when a patient came into the room to ask if someone forgot he was in the operatory.   [Credit: DentalTown Magazine; September, 2024]   #healthcare #dentalcare #smallbusiness #qualityassurance #cultureofexcellence #culture #excellence #efficiency #productivity #it #humanresources #hr #operatory #staffmeeting

  • ARTIFICIAL SWEETENER LINKED TO HEART ATTACKS & STROKES Many people use artificial, low-calorie sweeteners instead of sugar. One of the motivations is better dental health by avoiding the effect of processed sugar in feeding the oral bacteria that cause dental caries and tooth decay. Another one is weight control. But those benefits may be more than offset by the risk of heart attack and stroke. Researchers at the renowned Cleveland Clinic have published a new study indicating that Xylitol, an alcohol sugar that is a main ingredient in the artificial sweetener Splenda, causes changes in blood platelets that significantly increase the risk of blood clotting, heart attack and stroke. Last year, the Cleveland Clinic found similar results for another low-calorie sweetener called Erythritol, which is used as a bulking sugar in stevia, monkfruit and keto reduced-sugar products. This new research needs further confirmation, but it raises serious concerns not previously identified. We'll be following this topic closely in the coming months. #dentistry #dentalhygiene #dentist #hygienist #sugar #artificialsweetener #sweetener #dentalcaries #toothdecay #weightcontrol #xylitol #erythritol #heartattack #stroke

  • OTTAWA TRIES TO ENTICE MORE DENTISTS TO ENROL IN CANADIAN DENTAL CARE PLAN The Federal Government is liberalizing (apologies for the awful pun) the billing procedures for dental care providers under the Canadian Dental Care Plan in an attempt to entice more providers to register under the Plan. Previously, dental care providers had to register under the Plan to be able to submit claims for payment to Sun Life, the Plan Administrator. This requirement led to significant resistance in the dental sector as many dentists objected to the terms and conditions of the Plan's contract. The Feds are now allowing providers to submit claims to Sun Life on a 'one off' basis without registering under the Plan. The idea is to show that billing under the Plan is simple and straightforward, and payment is prompt (Fed data indicates average payment time is 2 business days). Although some Provincial Dental Associations and the Canadian Dental Association are still complaining about the terms and conditions of the Plan's contract - causing many dentists to hold back from registering as providers - the Plan is now approaching critical mass for the number of providers, which poses problems for dentists who don't join. There are now enough providers registered under the Plan that patients can - and will - change to a new dentist to obtain free treatment under the Plan. So now the dentists who haven't registered are faced with competitive pressures resulting in loss of patients and revenue from dentists who have registered as providers under the Plan. It will be very interesting to see how these opposing forces play out in the coming months! #healthcare #dentalcare #cdcp #canadiandentalcareplan #billing #competition

  • ALBERTA WANTS OUT OF CANADIAN DENTAL CARE PLAN Alberta Premier Danielle Smith says the province plans to opt out of the Canadian Dental Care Plan. Smith says the federal Plan infringes on provincial jurisdiction. She wants to get Alberta’s share of the federal funding to expand the province's dental care coverage as it sees fit. Smith says that 500,000 Albertans already benefit from provincial coverage for low-income persons and the federal Plan duplicates the provincial program. But the numbers tell a different story. Federal Health Minister Mark Holland says that more than 100,000 Albertans have enrolled in the federal Plan. So Alberta's provincial low-income dental plan missed 20% of the people it's intended to serve. Alberta Dental Association President-Elect Dr. Hans Herchen identified the real issue: Alberta needs money to "modernize" its existing provincial low-income dental program. “The plan in place for low-income patients in Alberta does not allow for them to get the best possible dental care due to the funding." #dentalcare #dentalhealthcare #healthcare #canadiandentalcareplan #cdcp #Canada #Alberta

  • DENTAL-CARE DOUBLE STANDARD Health Canada has released the Fee Schedule for the new Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) which will become active for patient care next month. And guess what? The Fee Schedule indicates that the Federal Government intends to pay for hygiene treatment in independent hygiene clinics at a much lower rate than for hygiene treatment done in dentists' offices. The difference in payment is as much as 20% lower in some provinces. So the program that was supposed to revolutionize access to dental healthcare in Canada instead institutionalizes discriminatory pricing against independent hygiene clinics. What a mess !!! This is bad for the dental hygiene profession !! And it's bad healthcare policy !! #dentistry #dentalhygiene #hygiene #dentalcare #dentalhealthcare #Canada

  • WORLD'S FIRST DRUG TO GROW NEW TEETH STARTS HUMAN TESTS The ability to regrow your own teeth could be just around the corner. A team of scientists at a Japanese pharmaceutical company will start human tests in July, 2024, of a new drug that has successfully grown new teeth in animal test subjects. Dr. Katsu Takahashi, lead researcher on the project and Head of the Dentistry and Oral Surgery Department at the Medical Research Institute Kitano Hospital in Japan, has been working on the concept of regrowing teeth since 2005. In his research at Kyoto University, he discovered a gene in mice that controlled the growth of their teeth. That led to the development of a neutralizing antibody that suppressed the gene, enabling the growth of new teeth. In 2015, Dr. Takahashi successfully tested the drug on mice, causing the growth of new teeth in them. Then in 2018 he succeeded with advanced testing in ferrets, which have a similar dental pattern to humans, inducing the growth of an additional complete healthy anterior upper tooth. A limited human test will begin in July, 2024. If it is successful, a full-scale clinical trial of the drug will start in 2025 for children between two and six years old with anodontia – a rare genetic disorder that results in the absence of six or more baby and/or adult teeth. At this stage, the main issue is to be able to direct the regrowth to specific teeth. If this can be resolved with further research, and if the human clinical trials are successful, Dr. Takahashi anticipates that this new drug could be available for regulatory approval by 2030. #healthcare #dentalcare #dentistry #teeth #teethreplacement #clinicaltrial #drug #pharmaceuticalcompanies
