About us
The Canadian Association of Police Governance (CAPG) is the only national organization dedicated to excellence in police governance in Canada. Founded in 1989 with the goal to improve the effectiveness of civilian bodies that govern local police services, we have since grown to represent 80% of municipal police service oversight bodies throughout Canada. For over 30 years, the CAPG has worked diligently to achieve the highest standards as the national voice of civilian oversight of municipal police. Legitimate police powers are derived from the consent of the public. As a result, it is incumbent upon the members of the CAPG to safeguard the public trust by acting ethically. The ethical foundation of justice, rule of law, moral core, human dignity and democratic principles forms the context for ethical decision making, which guide decisions made by the CAPG. The primary duty of all CAPG members is to work in support of Canadian democratic values that are enshrined in the Constitution and the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

Join us November 21st for our webinar: Equity, Diversity & Inclusion – How Far Have We Come? with Isobel Granger Join us for an insightful webinar led by Isobel Granger, a seasoned leader in law enforcement and a respected advocate for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) in policing. This session will examine the strides made and the challenges that remain in creating a more inclusive, equitable, and diverse environment within Canadian law enforcement. Equity, Diversity and Inclusion. The Ontario Human Rights Commission defines these three terms as: Equity is a distinct process of recognizing differences within groups of individuals and using this understanding to achieve substantive equality in all aspects of a person’s life. Diversity refers to the presence of a wide range of human qualities and attributes within an individual, group or organization, and includes such factors as age, sex, race, ethnicity, physical and intellectual ability, religion, sexual orientation, educational background and expertise. Inclusion is appreciating and using our unique differences in a way that shows respect for the individual and ultimately creates a dynamic multi-dimensional organization. During this webinar, Isobel Granger will speak to her own experience around EDI, highlight what she’s witnessed over the years and underscore how important understanding EDI is in building healthy, respectful, diverse, inclusive and equitable workplaces. Canadian Association of Police Governance reposted this
The latest figures for gun crime in parts of Canada make for worrying reading, with shootings in Toronto increasing by 58% on last year, and the average age of those involved dropping to 20; Professor Ardavan Eizadirad of Wilfrid Laurier University argues that the best way to tackle the issue is through a data-driven public health approach that addresses the root causes of violence using evidence-based interventions. ❝This trend reflects a troubling cycle of increasing youth involvement in the criminal justice system, with youth firearm arrests skyrocketing by 161% over the past two years.❞ ❝Emerging evidence points to a third strategy: a data-driven public health approach that tackles the root causes of violence using evidence-based interventions.❞ ❝Florida’s Pre-Arrest program has successfully reduced reoffends, minimized criminal records, and promoted community trust by focusing on rehabilitation over punishment.❞ ❝It is time to invest in long-term, data-driven solutions that support groups and communities most at risk through smart spending of money and allocation of resources.❞ https://lnkd.in/eQ84gHqT #lawenforcement #policing #police #crime #youthcrime #guncrime
