The Royal Canadian Geographical Society has bestowed Honorary Fellowships on two great Canadians: actor Hayden Christensen and broadcaster, podcaster and producer George Stroumboulopoulos. The honour recognizes the contributions both have made to advance the Society mandate to make Canada better known to Canadians and to the world. Christensen is celebrated for one of the most iconic roles in film history with his portrayal of Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader, as well as starring in numerous other films. Strombo is Canada's leading broadcaster. The Fellowships were presented by The Royal Canadian Geographical Society’s CEO John Geiger, CM and Fellow Aliya Jasmine, MA, FRCGS. • Every province and territory in Canada has its own museum — except for one…Nunavut. • Jarloo Kigutak remembers the first mosquito bite he ever had. He lives up above the Arctic Circle where there are no mosquitoes — except in a little inlet he once explored as a young archeological assistant. Halfway up Ellesmere Island, you’ll find that place: Alexandra Fiord, Nunavut. Seen by just a few intrepid souls, Alexandra Fiord is also home to a derelict RCMP post. Built in the 1950s, it is linked to Canada’s infamous High Arctic relocations and was once known as the northernmost police station in the world. Story by Danielle Paradis. https://lnkd.in/eRESdyjS This story is available to read in English, French and Inuktitut. • “Food insecurity might just be another way to say that an individual, family or group doesn’t have enough food. But on a more nuanced level, what does that actually mean? Or perhaps simpler yet, why are people in the North unsure where their next meal will come from?” writes Dustin Patar Across Nunavut, food insecurity continues to affect daily life. For many Inuit, the answer lies not in the grocery store, but on the land. Click the link below for photographer Pat Kane’s exploration of the issue, with words by Dustin Patar. https://lnkd.in/e7tvVVHz This story is available to read in English, French and Inuktitut. • Arctic history focuses on the fates of European explorers who sailed to the Northwest Passage in search of a shorter shipping route between Europe and Asia. More recently, the 2023 women-led Beyond Her Horizons expedition set sail to highlight the stories of Inuit women and the vital roles they played in Arctic exploration.
