Updates

  • Today the Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) announced that it has selected Wabigoon Lake Ojibway Nation and the Township of Ignace as the host communities for the future site for Canada’s deep geological repository for used nuclear fuel. This historic milestone is the result of a community-driven, consent-based site selection process that began in 2010. With this decision, Canada has taken one of many important steps towards to a responsible disposal solution for nuclear fuel, including those fuels currently in safe long-term storage at CNL-managed sites. You can learn more about the announcement and the NWMO on its website. https://lnkd.in/gqMn3QDx

Keeping people at the heart of #ScientificInnovation was one of the key messages that rang clear throughout the Canadian Science Policy Centre's conference, #CSPC2024, last week in Ottawa. This year’s theme for the annual conference was about the ability that science has to transform society through empowerment. As somebody whose role supports keeping CNL’s science and technology program innovative, Diana Van der Kooij walked away from the conference with further confirmation on just how important it is to effectively communicate why scientists do the work they do and how that work could positively impact our lives. Understanding science and its impacts helps us make more informed decisions within our day-to-day lives. And, as noted by AECL’s Rob Whittleston in this video, this knowledge also informs policy makers when deciding how to address issues through legislation. Click to watch the video below, and thank you to all who attended the panel, The Multiple Hats of Nuclear, which featured CNL’s Chief Scientific Officer Peter Elder, the CIHR Institute of Cancer Research's Scientific Director Dr. Fei-Fei Liu, the head of Kyoto Fusioneering America Bibake Uppal, and Global Advantage Consulting Group's CEO Ömer KAYA.

  • Originally a thorium recovery plant, this building at Chalk River has undergone significant transformation over the decades. From its origins dissolving fuel rods for the NRX reactor to its later role in water filtration, it’s seen it all. After years of remediation efforts, contamination within the building has been safely removed and has left the building demo ready! As we prepare for demolition and other future steps, our focus remains on waste minimization and risk reduction. This project underscores our commitment to safety and environmental stewardship. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to make novel advancements in nuclear decommissioning! #SafetyFirst #EnvironmentalRemediation #BuildingRestoration

  • From #electricians, #engineers, #projectmanagers, #plumbers to #scientists and #physicists, Canadian Nuclear Laboratories is currently working on expanding our team and filling a number of vacancies that have opened up over the year. These new opportunities are in departments spanning the entire company. To help fill this growing need, last weekend, we held a Career Fair in Kanata, Ontario. Over the two days, over 550 people showed up to learn more about CNL, our career paths and our current job openings. We brought along some fun tools and equipment for attendees to try out. This included a few gamma and beta ray detectors, which allowed users to have a hands-on experience at our Health Safety Security & Environmental booth. It was a great couple of days, and we'd like to say a big thank-you to all the candidates who came out! Successful candidates will be hearing from our team over the next four weeks. That said, we still have lots of opportunities in our growing team. Check out the details at https://ow.ly/oh4Z50Ue3TY

  • As we get closer to the holiday season, it’s time to reflect on ways that we can give back to our community and those in need. At CNL, we take pride in being part of a community that excels in innovation and science, but also excels in compassion and caring for one another. Our Chalk River Location is launching our annual United Way East Ontario - Centraide de l'Est de l'Ontario campaign on November 25th and it will run until December 6th. Throughout the next two weeks, employees will have a chance to take part in several fundraising activities around site and online. If you are not an employee but still want to contribute to our campaign to help us reach our goal, please visit https://uwco.ca/CNL and click on “friends of CNL.” Every donation makes a difference!
