This past summer marked the first field season for the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area project, which aims to restore habitat along the 🦋 Monarch migration route! A big thank you to the diverse group of partners – from municipalities to conservation authorities, to community organizations that engaged in preparing and seeding sites around the GTHA to grow habitat for Monarchs, even in some of the most urbanized areas in the region! Another BIG thanks to our sponsor 407 ETR! #PlusPourLaFaune

When it comes to declining grasslands, some Swifts can’t simply shake it off. 🦊 The Swift Fox is one of the many rare and endangered grassland species and is the smallest canine in Canada. Grasslands, the home of the Swift Fox, are some of the most diverse and least protected ecosystems in the world. The Canadian Wildlife Federation's Rights-of-Way as Habitat GTHA project was excited to support Oakvillegreen in 2024 on a project expanding the Kingsford Gardens Pollinator Pathway in Oakville, Ontario! Through the hard work of Oakvillegreen and its dedicated volunteers, pollinator habitat was improved and more habitat was added along a roadside. This pathway is providing essential nesting habitat with abundant feeding resources for Monarchs and other pollinators. We can’t wait to see it in full bloom next year, filled with bees, flies and butterflies! 🐝🦋 🤝 407 ETR

#DYK there are 5,000 species potentially at risk in Canada, 1,000 of which are a high priority to be assessed? The Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada is world class, but needs adequate resources for this critical process. With limited resources, there appears to be no way for the committee to carry out assessments for this many species, says James Pagé, CWF species at risk and biodiversity specialist. Assessment is only a first step in the process, followed by listing under the Species at Risk Act, legal protection, a recovery strategy and action plan; and many species are also awaiting these highly important next steps. Regardless of funding or political support, the underlying problem is that there are this many species potentially at risk in the first place, primarily on account of our human activity.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/eH-tGdgc CWF is moving ahead with its programs to support species like the American Eel, which has been assessed as Threatened but waiting 14 years to be listed! #WildlifeCantWait.
