🎉 Exciting news! Canadians for Tax Fairness has a new mailing address, and it’s located in a pretty historic spot. As of today, we’re officially operating out of our new PO Box at Toronto’s First Post Office, nestled within the Town of York Historical Society Heritage Site! Not only is this post office still functioning today, but it’s also a fascinating museum that brings Toronto’s early days to life. Here’s our new address: Canadians for Tax Fairness 260 Adelaide St E, PO Box 92 Toronto, ON, M5A 1N1 Acknowledgment of Traditional Lands We acknowledge that this sacred land and its waterways, on which Toronto’s First Post Office operates, are the traditional and ancestral territory of many First Nations, including the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Anishnabeg, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee, and the Wendat people. This land has been a site of human activity for time immemorial and is covered by Treaty 13 with the Mississaugas of the Credit. The territory was the subject of the Dish With One Spoon Wampum Belt Covenant, an agreement between the Haudenosaunee and Ojibwe Confederacies, and allied nations, to peaceably share and care for the resources around the Great Lakes. Today, the meeting place of Tkaronto is still home to many Indigenous people from across Turtle Island, and we are truly grateful to have the privilege to work in this community and on this sacred territory. Have you ever visited Toronto’s First Post Office? If not, we highly recommend it! #CanadiansForTaxFairness #HistoricToronto #TownOfYork #NewAddress #TaxFairness

LISTEN: Is Canada addicted to tax havens? C4TF’s Silas Xuereb spoke to Arshy Mann on The Hatchet to discuss Canada's persistent role in the problem of tax havens. The verdict? Plenty of talk but not nearly enough action. 🎧 Check out the full podcast here: https://lnkd.in/gRSpTJEC

The Project That Got Away: Building Tax Fairness in Canada’s Mining Sector As the year comes to an end, I’m reflecting on the great work my team and I have done. But there’s one project that didn’t come to fruition, and it’s been on my mind. We had an ambitious plan to investigate how the mining sector engages with Canada’s tax system, with the aim of holding mining companies accountable to Canada’s goal of a just and inclusive transition to a green economy. The project would have also explored whether our tax system is subsidizing Canadian mining companies linked to human rights abuses and violations of Indigenous rights within Canada and abroad. I'm sharing the LOI with this post, as the potential for this research remains important. If you’re interested in collaborating to make this project a reality, or if you know of organizations that may want to partner, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me or C4TF's researcher and policy analyst Silas Xuereb.

Does Canada's GST holiday cost us too much? In our latest blog, C4TF Executive Director Katrina Miller examines whether the temporary relief offered by the GST holiday is worth the risk and cost. While the measure may provide short-term relief, it primarily benefits wealthier Canadians, who tend to spend more on non-essentials like gifts and dining out, and large corporations like Walmart and Amazon. With a price tag of $6.2 billion, already underfunded public services—like healthcare, education, and housing—could face even more pressure for cuts. Long-term investments in critical areas such as non-market affordable housing, public healthcare, and accessible, high-quality education are needed to create lasting affordability, benefiting both today’s Canadians and future generations. If we truly want to ease financial pressures for all Canadians—not just in the holiday season but year-round—it’s time to move beyond superficial fixes and invest in structural changes that make life better for everyone. Today is #GivingTuesday but for Loblaw Companies Limited every Tuesday is Taking Tuesday. By increasing their prices and doubling their profit margins, these fine folks have helped deliver #foodinsecurity across Canada. Today, they will boast their partnerships with food banks to take some more, by taking credit for being part of the solution. For years now, Canadian companies, including those in the grocery sector, have been lining their pockets with excess profits. Charity alone will not solve the problem of food insecurity. Perhaps it's time to consider some alternative solutions, such as taxing large, profitable corporations and the wealthy. "Conservative lobbyists have long pushed the false narrative that corporate wealth signifies a booming economy and prosperity for all. But when you look at corporate profits in Canada, it’s clear that that wealth isn’t benefiting everyday people; instead, it’s doing little more than making the rich richer. Between soaring profits and the deepening affordability crisis, it’s urgent that more of this surplus go into our shared resources. We could be generating billions in new revenue to build #affordablehousing for Canadians. Instead, Canada’s largest corporations are underpaying workers and forcing them to live paycheck to paycheck, many just one renoviction away from homelessness." It’s not a “vibecession” — Canadians face real hardship "The pain Canadians are feeling isn’t an irrational reaction; it stems from structural economic failures driving inequitable outcomes that the federal government has yet to adequately address." Band-aid solutions like the temporary GST/HST holiday won’t solve the cost-of-living crisis. It’s time for bold, progressive tax reforms to tackle systemic inequality and ensure corporations pay their fair share. Fascinating report here from Canadians For Tax Fairness. 👇 Digs into excess profits in Canada since the pandemic & outlines how much could be raised if Canada were to bring in an excess profits (or windfall profits) tax. Report finds: “From 2021 through 2023, Canadian corporations collected $441 billion more in profits than expected based on the average rate of return on assets over the previous decade. By definition, these are “excess” profits.” And, if the federal govt were to extend the 1.5% surtax on banks & insurance companies that was implemented in 2022 but applied the tax to all sectors equally, it would raised an estimated $8 billion annually. https://lnkd.in/gdCCv42y
