Meet Abby Gloade, a third-year Biological & Medical Physics student minoring in Neuroscience at the University of Guelph. Abby has combined her passion for physics with hands-on experience, working as an Undergraduate Student Research Assistant in the Physics Department and engaging with initiatives like the Physics & Astronomy Club, Cheers and Gears, and Gryphons Give – Stem Cells for Life. “The best thing you can do is ask about potential opportunities and demonstrate the qualities researchers are looking for,” Abby says, encouraging students to get involved beyond the classroom. Five U of G engineering students and their custom-built toboggan, made from 350 pounds of concrete and metal, will race down a Montreal ski hill from January 22-26 for the 2025 Great Northern Concrete Toboggan Race (GNCTR). The Guelph GNCTR team, made up of 35 students from all engineering disciplines, will apply classroom skills in an interdisciplinary approach to toboggan design, enhancing teamwork and strengthening their sense of community. “Even though it’s an engineering club, the soft skills and transferrable skills that you develop, like project management, communication and conflict resolution, have been really helpful to me,” says co-captain Emma Sanderson. Dr. Bahram Gharabaghi, a professor in the University of Guelph - School of Engineering, is trying to build the next generation of “smart” salt trucks. He is currently working with an industry partner, Flodraulic Controls to enhance their salt-spreading system through machine learning and road surface monitoring. “This research will lead to the development of a real-time, GPS-enabled intelligent road salt application assistance tool. It will help create a critical tool for the next generation of smart salt trucks, resulting in higher road safety while better protecting the environment at a lower cost,” Dr. Gharabaghi said. Orbax in the Department of Physics explains how to see the planetary parade this month, where Mars, Jupiter, Uranus, Neptune, Venus, and Saturn will align in the night sky. A seventh planet, Mercury, will join the planetary parade in February. "We do see planetary alignments like this most years, but this one is unique because it’s happening at night when we’ll actually be able to see it, and early in the evening," says Orbax. Orbax is available for media interviews. Read more: https://lnkd.in/edQVQKwi

Drs. Vladimir Ladizhansky and Leonid S. Brown, Professors at the University of Guelph's Department of Physics and Biophysics Interdepartmental Group, are pioneering research on membrane protein unfolding. Their recent study uncovers key mechanisms behind how proteins maintain stability, which could impact our understanding of biological processes and diseases such as cystic fibrosis and Alzheimer’s.
