Drill, baby, drill? Last week, geologists Geoffrey Ellis and Sarah Gelman published estimates that more than five million megatonnes of carbon-free hydrogen could be obtained from subsurface geological sources around the world. Geological hydrogen is produced naturally using chemical reactions with metals found deep in the Earth’s crust. This hydrogen would contain more energy than all proven natural gas reserves on Earth, enough to reach net-zero carbon emissions for approximately 200 years. And surprise! Hone’s new hydrogen power generator is undergoing fitting and preparation for start-up in January 2025. These photos were taken in November and show the engine, manufactured by DEUTZ AG in Cologne, Germany, being integrated into the final generator assembly by Sommers Generator Systems in Stratford, Ontario, Canada. Following this commissioning event, Hone will be ready to introduce its mobile hydrogen power service to customers in the Toronto area! To our knowledge, this will be the first time that a purely hydrogen-fuelled combustion engine will be used for portable power. Hone was pleased to introduce its forthcoming hydrogen power service to generator operators and other film industry professionals at the Ontario Green Screen OGS Electric Generator Training Workshop at Pinewood Toronto Studios this past weekend. “Genny Ops” are responsible for overseeing the generation and distribution of power to all equipment on film & TV production sets, so that the cast and crew can do their jobs. Our own David Hardy led the discussion on hydrogen systems with Ry Smith and Bob Oliver sharing their deep technical expertise.
