On Jan 17th, I was able to attend the "How to Build Your Professional Network" hosted by University Canada West, Douglas College, and CPHR BC & Yukon with five esteemed panelists from different backgrounds and experiences Don Telan, Edmundo (Ed) Cardenas, MBA, CPHR, Gabriela Martins, CPHR, SHRM-SCP, Giselle Blackman, MBA, CPHR, SHRM-SCP, CHRL and Ali Najaf. Here are my takeaways from the panelists, at this incredible event 🤩 - Step outside your comfort zone; it doesn't have to be a big leap; you can start with small steps 👣 . - When contacting a professional, Be Intentional, Do your research, What are you trying to learn? 🙅♀️(Don't go asking for a job). - Be mentally strong 💪 (I know it is hard, especially as immigrants, but you can do it 🙌 ). - Listen 👂 is not all about you; hear their experiences and learn from them. - Don't just network with Managers and people from the top; connect with Junior employees or Team members from the company you want to work for. - When writing to your professional connection, "Be specific"; this is where "Do your research" helps out 😉. (Don't just write, "Hi, how are you?") - Communicate with purpose 💎, is an exchange not just one way. - Find a Mentor - Lastly, confidence is key (Practice if you don't feel confident). Networking may seem daunting or hard, but I hope my takeaways can help you improve, as they did to me. Thank you to the amazing panelists, University Canada West, CPHR BC & Yukon, Milan Singh Sandhu, CPHR, Student Ambassador, Kiyan Sheikh, B.A and all the volunteers that made this event happen, also I won a prize for a one-year free membership, could not be happier 🤩 thank you CPHR BC & Yukon and Quinne Davey (🏳️🌈 aspiring ally).
