The mysterious mechanism that links human gut health and brain health is being studied around the globe and CIFAR researchers are among the leading researchers advancing our understanding of the “gut-brain axis.” Through CIFAR’s Catalyst Fund project and cross-disciplinary meetings, researchers Brett Finlay and Laurel Trainor collaborated and published a study that looked at different types of gut bacteria present in infants and how this connects to their early cognitive development. Earlier this month, Nabilah C., Director of the Pan-Canadian AI Strategy at CIFAR appeared at the Standing Committee on Justice Policy’s study on Ontario’s Bill 194. We were honoured to have had the opportunity to present and provide feedback to the Committee and were pleased to see Bill 194 receive royal assent earlier this week. This Act will help address gaps in digital security and AI regulations. Digital technologies such as AI are rapidly developing and while they present numerous opportunities to be used for good, they also have several challenges. We encourage the government to continue to consult with stakeholders and other experts to develop the necessary regulations. It is essential that institutions have the tools they need to safeguard people's rights and privacy. Nous avons été honorés d’avoir eu l’occasion d’intervenir et de fournir des commentaires au comité, et nous avons été ravis de voir que le projet de loi 194 a reçu la sanction royale plus tôt cette semaine. Cette loi contribuera à combler les lacunes réglementaires en matière de sécurité numérique et d’IA. Les technologies numériques comme l’IA évoluent rapidement et, bien qu’elles offrent de nombreuses possibilités de servir le bien, elles posent également plusieurs défis. Nous encourageons le gouvernement à continuer de consulter les parties prenantes et d’autres spécialistes pour élaborer la réglementation nécessaire. Il est essentiel que les institutions disposent des outils qu’il faut pour protéger les droits et la vie privée des personnes.
