#AdvocacyinAction: 📢 This week, we were at the Canadian Institute for Public Health Inspectors' CIPHI Ontario conference to build awareness about the critical importance of food allergen management in the #foodservice industry. We engaged with #PublicHealth inspectors on how they can utilize our new #ThinkFoodAllergy tools and resources to spread knowledge within their networks. Together, we can create safer dining experiences for everyone! Let’s keep the conversation going and work towards a future where food allergy is managed with care and expertise. Thank you to everyone who came by our booth and participated in our session! 🙌✨ #FoodAllergyAwareness #Collaboration #CIPHI2024

Sharing highlights from this week's CIPHI Ontario 2024 Conference at Conestoga College, Innovations in Environmental Public Health: Harnessing Technology for a Resilient Future; a great event focused on how technology can drive progress in public health and resilience. I am thankful for the opportunity to speak on our research on leveraging zero-effort technology to quantify sleep quality metrics. I also shared insights, with Thokozani Hanjahanja-Phiri, PhD, on how this technology can drive equitable health outcomes by analyzing climate impacts across North America. Thanks to Plinio Morita, PhD MSc PEng and co-authors, Arlene Oetomo and Vivek Chauhan, for their invaluable contributions. Thank you to the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors for inviting me to speak at their 2024 CIPHI Ontario Conference at Conestoga College. I shared my lived experience and patient perspective as a transplant recipient plus the systemic barriers in the health care system to access prophylactic treatments for immunocompromised (IC) populations. Real-world evidence on the clinical and economic burden of COVID-19 demonstrated that IC individuals have suffered a disproportionate burden compared to non-IC populations. I also spoke on behalf of the Canadian Immunocompromised Advocacy Network (CIAN) to outline our mission, vision and advocacy efforts to protect immunocompromised populations through targeted infection control measures and easier and more equitable access to therapeutic options, like passive immunizing agents and protein-based vaccines, for COVID-19 and other communicable diseases. Public health guidelines also need to take into consideration a broader definition of being IC as 14% of the Canadian population now has an auto-immune disorder rather than the historical definition that only 1% of the population are severely IC. The bottom line is that more needs to be done to protect IC and to allow this population to live and thrive in a more safer and inclusive environment.
