We are user-driven, focusing on the needs of Indigenous communities, academia, provincial governments, municipalities, local service districts, non-profits, industry, and land-owners. CLIMAtlantic works with all regional and local groups to ensure there is a strong network of collaboration, and data and tools are easily accessible. CLIMAtlantic was created in partnership with the Canadian Centre for Climate Services (CCCS), all Atlantic Canada’s Provincial governments, and the support from the Ecology Action Centre, New Brunswick Environmental Network (NBEN), and Aster Group. The Canadian network of climate hubs in partnership with CCCS includes Ouranos (Quebec), the Pacific Climate Impacts Consortium (BC), and ClimateWest (Prairies). Regional climate data hubs support efforts to make all communities more resilient to extreme weather events.

Meet Willa! In this series, you will meet a few of the people who work with the partner organizations of ClimateData.ca. We hope you get a better sense of what they do and what drives their work. Willa Neilsen, Labrador Climate Services Specialist, CLIMAtlantic Tell us a bit about your work: “I work mainly with Indigenous communities and governments as they adapt to climate change, and help build capacity by supporting unique needs and challenges.” What’s something about your job that aligns with a personal sense of purpose? “One aspect of my job as a Labrador Climate Services Specialist that resonates with my personal sense of purpose is the opportunity to work closely with people to build resilience to climate change. My role allows me to build strong relationships with people all across Labrador, with a focus on Indigenous communities. This helps me to understand the unique needs and concerns, and to work together to find solutions that fit their specific contexts.” Being from Labrador myself, I have a real appreciation for the land and its people, which makes these relationships even more meaningful. It’s incredibly rewarding to see how our collective efforts can make a real difference in enhancing resilience and fostering a sense of hope and preparedness for the future.” Learn more about CLIMAtlantic here: https://climatlantic.ca/

In this series, you will meet a few of the people who work with the partner organizations of ClimateData.ca. We hope you get a better sense of what they do and what drives their work. Meet Stephanie Arnold, Strategy and Innovation Manager; PEI Climate Services Specialist, CLIMAtlantic Tell us a bit about your work: “I work alongside communities, organizations, sectors, and governments, bringing together different perspectives to tackle climate, environmental, and social challenges” What’s one thing you wish more people knew about climate change adaptation? “I wish everyone knew that they can have higher expectations of adaptation. Settling for making “business as usual” more resilient will not get us very far. Even if the climate crisis disappeared with the wave of a magic wand, we will still be left with declining biodiversity, rising food insecurity, increasing pressures on healthcare systems, inequities, and more. Rather than focus on climate risks as if they occurred in isolation, I wish we would collectively look at the bigger picture and tackle the underlying causes of climate change that are at the root of these interconnected issues.” What drives you to work in a field related to climate change? “I fell into climate change by chance over ten years ago, when a move from Toronto to PEI took me from the corporate world to the UPEI Climate Research Lab. What made me stay was the constant stream of opportunities to learn, develop relationships, understand the issue from different perspectives, collaborate, innovate, and make a difference.” Learn more about CLIMAtlantic here: https://climatlantic.ca/
