Contexicon lets language learners practice with video clips from Netflix.
Our goal is to help learners around the word get better faster, and have more fun in the process — by leveraging movies and TV shows for an immersion-centric learning experience.
We believe that the purpose of language education is to overcome language barriers: to open doors in an increasingly connected world, and to open hearts to meaningful intercultural experiences.
Happy to announce that I just published the first edition of my newsletter "Unlocking Fluency", entitled "5 Reasons You (Or Your Students) Are Still Not Fluent".
The goal behind the newsletter is to provide a psycholinguistic perspective on the problem of language acquisition and what learners and educators can do to align their efforts with the relevant cognitive processes.
If this sounds interesting, give it a read - I'd love to hear what you think!
Phrasal verbs are among the last aspects of English children acquire, and they're tough for 2nd language learners, too. It gets a little easier with cross-situational targeted immersion, though - one of the core principles behind Contexicon.
Check it out today: it's free and now publicly available on the Chrome Web Store 👉 https://lnkd.in/gFC24E8M
Do you know any intermediate/advanced language learners who want to work with authentic language content?
We just released a FREE Chrome extension for learners of English, Spanish, French, and German 👇
https://lnkd.in/gFC24E8M
It's brand new and based on a rather "opinionated" learning theory centered around language immersion - I'm curious what y'all think about it 😉
Here's the theory behind it in a nutshell:
👉 It's centered around the principle of "cross-situational immersion": learners get immersed in the target language from minute 1, but for every target word/expression/grammar concept they are learning, Contexicon shows them several examples from different shows/movies.
👉 With each encounter, their brains can infer some aspects of the target expression's meaning and use conditions. Under the hood we do this by generating a personalized "Learning Feed" for each learner that gets fine-tuned over time to match their level and learning objectives.
👉 Not able to understand every word just yet? No problem - beginners/pre-intermediate learners will first train their ears and learn the phonology of the target language. That's the beauty of immersion: the brain learns at all levels of representation at the same time, not just semantics/pragmatics.
I would love to hear what you think about this!
We just released an update to Contexicon with a much-requested feature: interactive blanks! 🥳
We'd still want students to hop over to Netflix for the all-important immersion, but now they can check their answer by themselves.
Check out the assignment from the video (about phrasal verbs): https://lnkd.in/gS5qmfze
Or make your own 👉 https://lnkd.in/g_NaV5BH
Thanks to those of you who requested that feature! Your feedback is super important to us, so please keep it coming 🙂
