#BePrepared this winter driving season. Snow fall, snow squalls, and blowing snow can cause hazardous driving conditions. Slippery roads, reduced or poor visibility, and road closures are all factors to consider before heading out on the road. Here are a few tips to stay safe this winter: • Avoid travelling when weather/road conditions are bad, if possible. • Slow down and leave plenty of distance between vehicles. • Have working winter tires, windshield wipers, and top-up windshield fluid. • Keep your vehicle’s fuel tank at least half full. • See and be seen - clear all snow from the hood, roof, window, and lights. Clear all windows of fog or ice. If visibility becomes poor, find a place to safely pull off the road as soon as possible. • Get an #EmergencyKit for your vehicle and that includes shelf stable food, water bottles, blankets, extra clothing and shoes, winter outerwear, traction aid such as sand / salt / non-clumping cat litter, car emergency warning devices such as reflectors / magnetic lights / orange reflective pylons, first aid kit – with seatbelt cutter, small shovel, scraper, snowbrush, crank or battery powered flashlight, radio, whistle, and boosters/jumper cables. • Be prepared at home with a #72HourEmergencyKit. When severe weather strikes or an emergency happens in your community, it may take time to resolve the situation (power outage, closed roads, etc.). Your household should be ready to take care of itself for a minimum of 72 hours. Check out the Government of Canada’s guide to getting prepared / planning for emergencies and make your plan with their printable template and list of emergency kit items: https://lnkd.in/eSpTWEC For more information about winter road conditions, road closures, etc. visit our website: https://lnkd.in/eCfF9PeX

Lest We Forget... 🍁 Grey County honours members of Canada's Armed Forces who served during times of war, and those who gave their lives in the line of duty. We remember the brave Canadians who gifted us freedom after encountering the atrocities of war. We bow our heads for a moment of silence on November 11 to acknowledge those who have fallen during international military engagements and peacekeeping missions worldwide. We are eternally grateful to the veterans who served our country and those who continue to champion peace around the world. May their legacy of courage and sacrifice never be forgotten. #RemembranceDay A reminder that Grey County offices and remote services are closed on Monday (November 11, 2024) in honour of Remembrance Day and will re-open on Tuesday (November 12, 2024). All 24-hour and emergency services will continue. For up to date information on Grey County services, news, etc. visit our website www.grey.ca.

News: #RockwoodTerrace, Grey County’s long-term care home in Durham, celebrated its 40th anniversary this year. In October, the home’s residents, resident family members, county staff, and local dignitaries including Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound MPP Rick Byers, County of Grey Warden Brian Milne, and Municipality of West Grey Mayor Kevin Eccles visited Rockwood Terrace to celebrate the milestone. Speeches recognized the home’s history, and the home’s caring and compassionate staff were thanked for their dedication. “Forty years ago, Rockwood Terrace opened its doors with a mission to provide quality care and a nurturing environment for our senior community,” said Grey County Warden Brian Milne. “Over the years, it has become much more than a long-term care facility – it has become a true home and community for the residents, their families, and our incredible long-term care staff. The walls of Rockwood Terrace have witnessed countless stories of love, compassion, and resiliency, and from what I’ve heard and seen today it continues to be the place where people genuinely feel right at home.” Check out the full story on Grey County's news webpage. A few weeks ago community and staff volunteers gathered to continue transforming the lawn at the Grey County Administration Building! 🌳 This multi-year #GoingGreeninGrey naturalization project, in partnership with Neighbourwoods North (NWN) and The Sustainability Project, began with a mini forest in 2022, added two pollinator gardens in 2023, and fruit trees in 2024. During this work bee, volunteers laid out lumber tarps (that otherwise go to the landfill), and covered them with mulch to smother the grass underneath and prepare the ground to plant next fall. This method also allows the wood chips to decompose for a year as well, so their nutrients will be available to the plants sooner. Looking to transform your lawn? Julie from Rooted By The Bluffs shared some key things to think about if you are looking to start your own small orchard or food forest. • 💧 Water: How will you water? Fruit trees need about a 5 gallon bucket's worth of water each week from spring to fall in their first few years. • ☀ Sun: Fruit trees need a minimum of 8 hrs of sun per day to be healthy and thriving. • 🌱 Soil: Fruit trees require well-drained soil, and their preference is sandy loam. • ⏰ Time: How much time do you have to care for the trees? Start small and choose your number of trees accordingly. • 🌲 Perennial Focus: Use perennial plants that don’t require annual tilling. They naturally die back in winter, enriching the soil.
