We are proud of our long history of collaboration with the City of Mississauga on projects and initiatives across the Credit River Watershed. Thank you to the City of Mississauga for recognizing the value in supporting the smart blue roof project and participating in it’s development as part of the technical advisory committee.

With fall colours comes fall planting season! 🍂 🌱 Our Restoration teams prioritize teamwork for successful project outcomes. Through the removal of a weir on an East Credit River tributary this fall, a natural channel was restored where a pond basin used to be. Our Aquatic Restoration team worked with the Naturalization team to add the finishing touches to this multi-year project by planting trees, shrubs, grasses and other vegetation along the new riverbanks. Planting larger rooted materials strengthens the bank and protects it from erosion. Eventually, these trees and shrubs will shade the new channel, providing a cool habitat for sensitive fish species like brook trout. Congratulations to Christine Zimmer for presenting on the innovative work she is leading at CVC on climate change risk science at the 2024 Asia-Pacific Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction #APMCDRR2024. We developed the Risk and Return on Investment Tool (RROIT) in partnership with Risk Science International (RSI) and Climate Risk Institute (CRI) with funding support by the Region of Peel, member municipalities and RBC Foundation. RROIT helps us understand where the risks of flooding and erosion are greatest. The tool is in use by our watershed municipal partners to help target actions by: - Quantifying potential direct and indirect damages in dollars from flooding and erosion under different climate scenarios. - Compare the effectiveness of different stormwater management solutions - Performs financial assessments for each mitigation option to help make cost-effective decisions and reduce risk. Since 2014 we have improved our real-time monitoring capabilities with a network of climate stations, rainfall and stream flow gauges. Today we have 59 gauges across the watershed that capture information in real time, alerting us to changes in weather conditions and water levels. Using data from our gauge network and alerts from Environment Canada about inclement weather conditions, we run flood forecasting models to predict water levels based on weather forecasts and other factors like soil types and land use. This helps forecast flooding and predict impacts. Every second counts in a flood emergency.
