Please note: CRIN follows Government of Canada approved methodologies that are 3rd party verified for substantiating environmental claims. However, recent amendments to Section 74.01(1) of the Competition Act have introduced uncertainties. Consequently, CRIN cannot currently publicly share environmental performance metrics for the projects we support. Once the Government of Canada clarifies what constitutes adequate and proper substantiation in accordance with internationally recognized methodology, CRIN will ensure all environmental benefit claims reporting comply with these standards and will again publish the data on our website and social media. For inquiries regarding environmental performance metrics, please contact a CRIN representative directly. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause in the interim.

Canada is the global leader in clean hydrocarbons from source to end use.
About us
The Clean Resource Innovation Network (CRIN) unites Canada’s oil and gas industry, innovators, technology vendors, academia, research institutes, financiers and government. By aligning priorities, addressing gaps and incentivizing innovation, CRIN will accelerate the commercialization of ground-breaking technologies through investments in research, testing and large scale field pilots. Innovation areas will be selected for the highest transformational impact and environmental improvements while capturing domestic and international sales opportunities for small and medium enterprises. This will drive economic growth to ensure Canada’s continued prosperity with new high-value jobs through spin offs and economic diversification. Proposed technology focus areas include novel approaches to: carbon reduction, water use, methane emissions quantification and abatement, digitization, hydrocarbon extraction, well abandonment and site remediation. Delivering energy with a lower environmental footprint and higher productivity gives Canada’s oil and gas sector a competitive advantage and paves the way for Canada to be the global leader in delivering clean, reliable, affordable energy to the world.

A successful Kathairos Solutions project funded by CRIN resulted in the significant expansion of Kathairos’ methane-elimination technology, from operating on an initial six well sites to 1,500 over the two-year project duration. The Simple Methane Elimination Using Nitrogen project involved the commercial demonstration of Kathairos’ nitrogen-based methane elimination technology on 24 well sites with Cenovus and 30 sites with Ovintiv, all in the greater Grande Prairie region in Alberta and B.C. Kathairos’ technology uses liquid nitrogen, a non-toxic, non-polluting gas that constitutes 78% of the air we breathe, to power pneumatic devices at remote oil and gas well sites. By using liquid nitrogen, the need for methane as an instrument gas is eliminated, as is the need to vent the harmful gas after use. The project provided a meaningful reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions while demonstrating to the international energy industry that methane vented from pneumatic devices on remote well sites can be reliably and affordably brought to zero.
