A new research tool developed by Western Law and the Canadian Race Relations Foundation can help lawyers determine whether a crime is motivated by bias, prejudice or hate. The tool provides insight and information based on more than 15 years of hate crime case law. "My hope is that successful prosecution of hate crimes will serve as a deterrent and we can avoid hate crimes in the future. But this is not a magic bullet, there is so much that needs to be done to address hate in Canadian society, including increased education.” - Sunil Gurmukh, law professor and assistant dean (equity, diversity, inclusion and decolonization)

Our first public art project in the Yukon is one to celebrate ✨ As part of the CreateSpace Public Art Residency, artist-in-residence Krystle Silverfox creates a series of anamorphic sculptures that tell an ancestral Yukon First Nations story of the Raven and the Sun. We’re so proud of Krystle for this accomplishment and grateful to the Klondike Institute of Art and Culture for their generous partnership. It was a team effort with the additional support of local welders who ensured a successful installation! La rédactrice en chef de La Converse, Lela Savic a également modéré un panel sur le racisme anti-asiatique lors de l’événement « Trouver un terrain d’entente », organisé par The Globe and Mail et soutenu par la Canadian Race Relations Foundation Les trois panélistes—Karen Cho, Teresa Woo-Paw et Xiaobei Chen—ont mis en lumière la distinction cruciale entre crimes haineux et racisme systémique, ainsi que la peur qui persiste au sein de la communauté asiatique face aux accusations d’espionnage et à la manière dont ces accusations sont relayées par les médias. Ils ont aussi abordé l’exclusion du racisme anti-asiatique dans les initiatives d’équité, diversité et inclusion (EDI), tout en soulignant l’importance de reconnaître l’identité québécoise-chinoise, souvent marginalisée dans le contexte québécois.

In a world where polarization is often the norm, the act of truly listening becomes an act of courage. But it is through these conversations — even when they are difficult or challenging — that we begin to break down the silos that separate us. It's through dialogue that we create pathways to shared understanding and collective action.
